  • Perhaps tourism can pay for sewage plant

    Sep 29, 2016

To the Eagle: Down here in the steaming jungles and primordial swamps of Puget Island, we have very primitive sewer systems. Our own has a total of about 20 feet of pipe, which dump waste into a tank where it is viciously attacked by anaerobic bacteria that reduce it to fertile slurry that flows into an underground irrigation system fertilizing our lawn. Makes us jealous of our neighbors in Cathlamet who have this ultra-modern system with miles of pipe and huge pumps to send the waste uphill to a scenic mountainside aerie where a multi-million...

  • Covered Bridge dinner to be held Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Sep 29, 2016

GREAT START--We couldn't have ended the weekend any nicer, or started this work week any better either, as the skies were blue, the sun was shining and the evening hours were perfect for being outside around the BBQ and enjoying a wonderful time with friends. It also made for great weather for those who needed to get those gutters cleaned, mow the lawn or any other array of "get ready for the rainy season" chores! I'm guessing that in spite of the work that needed to be done, all Seahawk football fans took some time off to watch them take on...

  • Town water, sewer rates are going up

    Rick Nelson|Sep 22, 2016

Rates for customers of Town of Cathlamet water and sewer utilities may soon rise. Faced with accountants' predictions that the utilities' operations aren't sustainable under current rates, the council agreed Monday to develop new rate schedules for the two systems. The town's sewer system fund will probably end the year in an $85,000 shortfall, officials reported. The town will be able to use fund reserves to cover the shortfall, but the reserves will be depleted in 2017, they said. Public Works Director Duncan Cruickshank presented an...

  • Infrastructure, security occupy PUD board

    Diana Zimmerman|Sep 22, 2016

Securing infrastructure and creating a safe and secure environment for employees were at the heart of the PUD Board of Commissioner’s meeting on Tuesday. Town of Cathlamet Councilman Dick Swart was in attendance and talk turned to the recently completed water intake project. “I think that the results were about 100 gallons per minute more with the new pipe in,” Swart said, “but the [Elochoman] river is at its lowest point. This is not a cure-all. We hoped for more but this is what we are get...

  • Donations to USO are suggested

    Sep 22, 2016

To The Eagle: I’d like to mention a free resource for military personnel and their families while they are on travel status. There are at least 17 USOs located at airports across the U.S. These free facilities have different amenities and hours of operation. Check the web before you travel. I toured the largest facility at Baltimore Airport (SeaTac and Portland both have them). GFWC/USO of WA/OR have joined together to help support these valuable services by providing snacks for our military men/women, and a safe comfortable place to relax, w...

He communicates easily, clearly and comfortably. He has been very active in the county as a volunteer, city council member and a fire commissioner. • Covered Bridge dinner to be held October 1

    Kay Chamberlain|Sep 22, 2016

NICE START--After a bit of wetness to end last week, I was nicely surprised to see mostly sunny skies on Sunday to begin this week on a drier note. Some of the guys may not have been too happy about it, as it might have meant they had to give up some TV football time to go and mow that lawn one more time, but hopefully there was plenty of time left to watch their favorite teams or take in a little NASCAR! Of course, that was daytime hours, as Sunday evening wound up good and wet around West Valley, and depending on where you were, so was part...

The Wahkiakum Community Center should soon re-open under direction of a new manager. The center, located in the first floor of the Cathlamet library building, has been closed since the end of July when funding ended for its Americorps manager. Some programs in existence at that time have continued under direction of volunteers, but the center has been closed. Prior to the meeting, the group from NPS met with sixth and eighth grade students in order to get a feel for what the local youth might want in a park. According to Brianna Truden of NPS, the students' complaints about community parks centered on unsanitary bathrooms, distance, neglected basketball...

  • Couple urges voters to support Prestegard

    Sep 15, 2016

To The Eagle: This fall the citizens of Wahkiakum County have the opportunity, and the duty, to carefully evaluate and elect the best candidates running for a variety of local, regional and national public offices. Locally the county commissioner position is of major importance because the commissioners are both the legislative and the executive branches of our local government. As such the position of county commissioner requires the office holder to possess the education, experience and personality traits we expect to see in successful...

  • Oktoberfest Vendors Fair this Saturday

    Sep 15, 2016

NICE WEEKEND--We had a pretty great weekend weather-wise, as there was a lot going on and it's always great when big events wind up enjoying sunny days. One of those who really depends on nice weather, is the " End of the World Rod Run " down at the beach, and by the look of the traffic, they were packed down there. Lines and lines of hot cars, trucks towing car trailers or motor-homes and such, were just solid, both coming and going, so for those folks, it was the perfect weekend, as a car show isn't much fun in the rain! From the sounds of...
