To The Eagle: With Police and Sheriffs being targeted, most probably, we with military police, and civil police training, and experience, should function as a force multiplier, as to, See Something, Say Something! However, with Mark’s work on community policing, we have, and need, the common senses of our county’s citizens, too, also, See Something, Say Something. As former Academy trained, although dated, I know what is important. Based upon the Sheriff’s report, we have a good start on community policing, via Mark’s work on the issues,...
To The Eagle: I attended the meeting of the candidates at the Skamokawa grange last Tuesday evening and was very interested to note that counties that allowed the sale of recreational marijuana received 10 percent of the funds raised in their respective counties. When I questioned the politicos in attendance they said that it was true but Wahkiakum county has refused to allow the business. When further questioned, Dan Cothren stated that he was personally against it. I suppose my next question should have been since when does his personal...
GETTING WARMER--We ended last week with a few showers and some cloudiness, but that was ok, as those extra high temperatures don't thrill me much anyway. However, for all those "want it hot" folks, Sunday began with clear blue skies and warm sunshine right off the bat, so I'm guessing they were mighty happy! If the forecast holds, it looks like Summer is returning this week, so keep lathered up with sun screen and enjoy! Sadly, another child was left in a car in the heat this past week and she is struggling to survive as temperatures rose to...

The Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors approved the budget for the 2016-2017 year with the general fund expected to expend $6,282,812 at their July meeting on Tuesday. They also approved the purchase of 30 more Chromebooks and...
Members of the Cathlamet Town Council took a cautious approach to affirming agreements at their Monday meeting, acting on some issues and deferring others to next month in order to better understand the issues. First, the council affirmed an agreement with Wahkiakum PUD on how to share the remaining number of connections allowed to the town and Puget Island Water Systems. The state Department of Health (DOH) has limited the number of connections to 35, saying those connections would place maximum sustainable demand on the town water system....
To The Eagle: The letter to the editor last week (It just makes no sense) seems to me was appropriately titled. The first point I guess the writer was trying to make is White Americans are more important to the media than people of color. Her proof was one killing got more coverage than another. I listen to and read many news sources and heard and read many reports about both horrible events. Perhaps if I only listened to public radio as the writer indicated she does, I too would be ignorant of the facts. Decent people of all races are shocked...

"Our victims are the most important part of this event!" Here's what role players can expect: Prior to this event they will be moulaged. "This is the craft of making you look realistically injured," Renfro said. "We have several...

With the help from some friends, Puget Island resident Bud Mickelsen is seeing an old dream come true, to share fishing rod building with people who could benefit from and enjoy the art. Mickelsen has been building fishing rods for the better part of 66 years. But first, let's step back in time a bit. In the early 2000s, Wahkiakum High School Voc/Ag teacher John Doumit had heard Mickelsen talk about raising money for Dollars for Scholars. He also found out that Mickelsen built rods. "The last tw...
Bald Eagle Days 2016 is upon us, and it’s not going to rain, if Paige Lake the Chamber of Commerce executive director and coordinator for the big event has anything to say about it. She’s been watching the weather for a week. On Tuesday, the 50 percent chance of rain predicted had decreased to 10 percent and the highs were expected to be in the mid 60s. The first indication of this weekend’s festivities will appear on Thursday evening as signs will be posted warning residents and visitors parked...
MIXED--When it came to nice days or wet days, it sure depended on where you were last weekend as to how good of a day it was. As I was looking at black skies and watched the rain pound down, I saw postings and pictures of folks enjoying the sunshine as close by as Cathlamet, Rainer and as far away as Sunriver! But West Valley seemed to have hooked onto a rain cloud and it was making sure it gave my lawn a good watering; one perk of the rain I guess! We'll just hope the blue skies will show back up as suggested by the weather maps and the Bald...
