As Wahkiakum County moves slowly through the process to set up sites for placing dredged sands on eroding shorelines, some Cape Horn residents are starting to think they may have to take matters into their own hands. The county has been working for a year with residents of Puget Island's East Sunny Sands and more recently the Cape Horn area east of Cathlamet to get dredged sand dumped on eroding beaches. The county has hired a consulting engineering firm to handle the environmental studies and...

Bud and Dottie Mickelsen must have made an impression in the 18 years they've lived on Puget Island, because this year they will be the grand marshals of the Bald Eagle Days Parade on July 16. Like a lot of people who are committed to service, the Mickelsens didn't want to talk much about themselves, preferring to talk about the Warriors and Widows event they started last year. The event teams veterans, widows, and children of veterans with local volunteers who take them fishing on the Columbia...
General Manager Dave Tramblie brought the PUD Board of Commissioners up to speed at their meeting on Tuesday morning. Hancock Timber was being required to remove a section of the Deep River mainline road and had contacted Tramblie to let him know that this would include part of the PUD’s water main. Tramblie reported that the PUD would put in a temporary line and put the new main in on the newly graded slope when it was done. According to Tramblie, the PUD is required to relocate the pipe and w...
To The Eagle: Margaret Lapic, c/o Americorps Grants Program Subject: Grant status for Wahkiakum County Dear Ms. Lapic: As a committed volunteer at both the Cathlamet Community Center, and the Cathlamet Library, it was immensely disappointing to learn that the Americorps grant to continue support for a coordinator position at the Community Center was denied for fiscal 2016-2017. I realize that Wahkiakum is a much smaller community than Cowlitz County, but we have basic needs as does your county. We have no youth center, no senior center, and...
To The Eagle: The 19th Legislative District in Washington State, which includes Cowlitz, Wahkiakum, Pacific, Lewis and Grays Harbor counties, has had no representation of women in that district in over thirty years! We now have an opportunity for an educated, informed, and experienced candidate in Teresa Purcell. Teresa was raised in this area; she cares about this area; and, through her business and contacts from Olympia, Teresa knows the process. Isn't it time? Teresa has my vote - join me! Sandra Davis Cathlamet...

Plans are shaping up for Cathlamet’s Bald Eagle Days summer festival July 15 and 16. The two-day festival includes the traditional parade, street fair, and fireworks show. Organizers are enhancing the relatively new geocaching event, turning it into a two-day family geocaching competition treasure hunt. Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Organizers have hidden sev...

OFF & ON HOLIDAY--Our Fourth of July holiday started out pretty nice for the first couple of days, but we woke up to rain here in West Valley on both Sunday and Monday. If you happen to be one of these people who are experiencing low water levels in your creek or well, I'm guessing you were pretty happy to see some rain fall, but that little bit probably won't do you much good, but it does take down the fire danger a bit, and with massive fires in some areas, the rain is a good thing. I hear we are to get some real rain by the end of the week...

To The Eagle: There are two types of taxpayers: authentic taxpayers and taxpayers. The authentic taxpayers are homeowners and employees that earn their wages by working for themselves or nongovernment businesses. Taxpayers are homeowners and employees that work for the government and they earn their wages by pocketing off the authentic taxpayers’ paychecks. That said, I’m all for paying our military, veterans, law enforcements, firefighters, roads and education. However, I question the thousands of politicians living high off the authentic tax...
Local officials met Tuesday with representatives of the National Park Service to plan the design process for a waterfront park in Cathlamet. The group is working on a plan for converting the town's old sewer lagoons into a park adjacent to the Elochoman Slough Marina. The town has received a grant from the park service for the work. The group spent much of Tuesday going over a draft survey to be presented to the public in July. The group will tally results, and from there, a park service architect will develop a few possible layouts to present...
Users of the Cathlamet Community Center were prepared to volunteer to cover the down time created when Cheryl Kingston finished her year of Americorps service as the center manager, but the Cowlitz Americorps Network decision to cut funding for the position altogether was a bit of a surprise. At a meeting last week, Sue Cameron, the director for Wahkiakum Health and Human Services and other community members discussed ways to solve the funding and staffing problem. The group that gathered to...
WARM BEGINNING--As this week begins, it's a toasty Sunday; upper 80s in West Valley and I've heard other areas are a little hotter than that, but that's plenty for me. I'm sure those that got soaked last Thursday and Friday are glad to see the sun arrive once again, as it's tough to start a big garage and yard sale when it's super soggy out there. However, it's supposed to be dry all week, and possibly all through the holiday weekend so be sure to take all the heat precautions. However, with the cloudiness here on Monday and Tuesday mornings,...
