  • Landscaping for Wildlife in your Home Garden

    Winnie Lowsma, WSU Master Gardener|Mar 24, 2016

Maybe the constant rains will cease. It is time to get out and consider the plants for your yard and garden. Landscaping for wild life has become a popular theme, primarily since so many of our birds and insects seem to not thrive with modern agriculture, modern landscaping and loss of habitat. The National Wildlife Federation, the Nature Conservancy and like other organizations have been promoting the use of native plants and gardening schemes to enhance the attraction of your garden to the small creatures. Recent research has indicated that...

Unsworthy and Norman said the Oregon and Washington departments continue to study fisheries under the Kitzhaber Plan with an eye on evaluating it at the end of the year. The plan, named after former Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber, basically allocates the majority of salmon harvest in the Columbia to anglers, shifts commercial gillnetters into side channels, and encourages development of alternative commercial gear. Chinook runs on the Columbia should be above average and offer lots of opportunity for all fishers this year, Norman said....

  • Spring sports to begin this week

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 17, 2016

WILD BEGINNING--Last Sunday was forecast as a wet and windy one and by golly, early that morning, we started getting some pretty good gusts out here. I had hoped that our first day of losing an hour of sleep due to Daylight Savings Time would be relatively calm but no such luck, as my flying garbage can gave me an early wake up call! Rarely do we get wind that impacts our backyard area, so that took me by surprise. Later in the afternoon, we lost power, like most of the valleys in Skamokawa, which was due to a fallen tree out East Valley but af...

  • Daylight Savings Time begins this weekend

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 10, 2016

MIXED BAG--I no sooner turned in my news last week and the weather took a turn for the worse and got pretty wet and pretty windy and some areas wound up losing power, while others had trees coming down, but it really depended on where you were as to how bad it was. Some of the days that were forecast for being miserable, were actually half-way decent, meaning part of the day was dry and sunny, while the rains poured down later on, but that beat a whole day of nastiness, so that was fine with us. Considering the flooding going on in other parts...

We talk to remove the stigma and if people are not held accountable it's not going to stop." Last year, Vik asked several community members to create signs that...
