  • Crafts bazaar Saturday at Methodist Church

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 22, 2015

DAMP WEEKEND--Temperatures are finally cooling off this week and it seems more like Fall after some record breaking heat last week in some parts of the Northwest, as Portland was seeing temps in the 80s. Fortunately, we were cooler than that, and the mornings were cloaked in heavy fog that brought some needed moisture to our lawns and woods. By Saturday and Sunday, we were experiencing some light rains at times, so while it wasn't dumping, it was still fairly wet and gray looking out there. However, that was mild compared to other places and...

Susan O'Connor was appointed to the Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors in August of 2013. Now she finds herself in a race against challenger Derek West to retain the position. When former school board member Lee Tischer encouraged her to volunteer a couple years ago, she set aside her doubts and concerns about the time commitment and stepped forward. "It sounded good because I love school," O'Connor said. "Education is the nation's first priority. If you don't have intelligent, educate...

  • Are you ready if the power goes out?

Beau Renfro, Coordinator, Department of Emergency Management|Oct 15, 2015

Our local PUD has taken great care in making sure our power stays on, but they have no control over Mother Nature. After a significant natural disaster like a severe earthquake it could take an extended amount of time for our power to be restored to all residents. There are steps you can take in advance of a power outage to insure you and your family are safe and comfortable. • If someone in your household has life-sustaining or medically necessary equipment you should register it with the PUD. • Consider buying a generator. When installing a g...

  • Now is the time to get those flu shots

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 15, 2015

NASTY ONE--The winds blew and rains came down so heavy that our satellite went out at times, so it wasn't real pleasant here last Saturday night. We even had a mostly wet day Friday in West Valley, capped off with a power outage, which was a far cry from the weather 10 miles east, but then, we do live in Skamokawa, so you never know what you'll get! Luckily, Sunday started out the week with some sunshine after some morning clouds so at least the weekend wasn't a total bust. To end the weekend, Mother Nature splashed some dazzling colors across...

  • Covered Bridge dinner is 'the best fund raiser'

    Diana Zimmerman|Oct 8, 2015

The 8th Annual Covered Bridge Dinner was held on Saturday. The warm fall afternoon cooled as the evening came on and the light faded from the sky, making it hard to make out the children playing in a nearby field. Jeffrey Reynolds serenaded tables with his violin. Joel Fitts recited some cowboy poetry. Table by table, participants made their way to the tables where food was being served. Later, the adults remained in the covered bridge, which had been strung with lights, watching or bidding for...

  • Friday night slights

    Oct 8, 2015

To The Eagle: I attended my first Wahkiakum High School football game this past week. The effort by the Wahkiakum players was really something to see and admire. It was apparent how much work and dedication the players and coaches put into the football program. The cheerleaders do a number of difficult routines all game long in nearly flawless unison. I am sure they must practice and work hard and long to accomplish that. The student (Micca Cothren) who sang the National Anthem was amazing. The large number of family, friends and fans of these...

  • Former mayor offers two options for water

    Oct 8, 2015

To the Editor: Cathlamet’s Town Council made the right decision when it opted to begin the process of replacing the intake at the water plant. Nonetheless, I fear this might not dissuade the Department of Health from limiting the number of new connections. The DOH is pushing not just for system improvements, but for the town and the PUD to resolve their longstanding contract dispute. That will happen in one of two ways: the PUD will agree to a deal that adequately compensates the town for its water, or opt instead to build its own water plant t...
