NICE START--As this third month of the new year started, it was pretty doggone nice last Sunday, after a nice day on Saturday to end February as well, so we had a nice weekend after a pretty drippy day on Friday. The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Crab & Oyster Feed on Saturday March 14. This will be the 30th year for this event. The event will be held at the Norse Hall on Puget Island, just across the bridge from downtown Cathlamet. The Crab & Oyster feed is a fundraising event for the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce. Elizabeth Austen has spent a portion of her two year term as the Poet Laureate for Washington state visiting every county. Last Friday, she stopped in Cathlamet to meet with students in Audrey Petterson's English class at Wahkiakum High School and spend an hour with local residents at the Cathlamet Library. Leroy E. “Roy” Beard 85, of Cathlamet died on February 26, 2015 at home. He was born in Sandy, Ore., on June 24, 1929. He grew up in the Elochoman Valley where he came to live as a child. He joined the Navy during WWII and when he returned he married Lena “Sunnie” Miller in 1949. They lived in Cathlamet and Gold Beac,h Ore., before coming back to Cathlamet to stay. Roy worked in sawmills prior to owning his own shake mill in the Elochoman Valley. In 2001 he retired and he and Sunnie enjoyed traveling and selling the beautiful Indian Artwork...
The first public meetings on the update of Wahkiakum County's Shoreline Program started this week with a small group of citizens giving input Tuesday in Cathlamet. Called visioning workshops, the meetings' agenda includes presentations from planners about the process and its goals and finishes with discussions of what citizens would like to see happen on county shorelines.
