Association seeks funds for Pioneer Church

Members of the Pioneer Community Association board of directors gathered in the center last Thursday before starting their meeting. They're working to raise funds to complete installation of a fire supression sprinkler system so that the center may be used for concerts, weddings and other events. L-r are Jennifer Johnson, JoAnn Prestegard, Diana Zimmerman, Gwen Gorley and Kay Cochran; other board members are Gene Healy, Stephanie Prestegard and Carrie Backman.

Long active with concerts, lectures, weddings and more, the Pioneer Church in Cathlamet now sits quiet. It was closed last year when the local fire marshal learned that its fire suppression system was not up to code. Since that time, the Pioneer Community Association has been scrambling to fund the purchase and installation of a system, estimated to cost $35,000, in order to re-open its doors.

The Pioneer Church, now known as the Pioneer Center, is a 120 year old historical building owned by the Pioneer Community Association and leased by the Town of Cathlamet. The PCA traditionally uses the center to schedule educational, literary, musical, civic, social and cultural events for the community.

The association has already received one grant and several donations, but they are still only about halfway to their goal. The members are actively looking for more grants and considering other fundraising opportunities.

An account for the Pioneer Center has been set up for donations on the Go Fund Me website under the name of "Re-Open Pioneer Community Center". For a direct link, go to: http://www.gofundme.com/i4k59k.

The PCA's annual meeting is scheduled for March 26 at 6 p.m. in the Hotel Cathlamet and is open to anyone who may be interested in becoming a member.
