Probably the most telling moment of Fred W. Beck, Jr.’s life was on an early day in July, 1972, when he and his former wife, Joanne, decided to adopt six kids. It was his biggest challenge and became his greatest role. The three boys and three girls ranged in ages between nine and three. Some of them already knew more about a hard and mean world than he ever would. Fred Beck was born in Pontiac, Illinois, in 1940 to Frederick William Beck and Annabell Sable Beck. He received a degree in e...

On June 21, five members of the Cathlamet Woman's Club donned orange vests and picked up litter along SR 4 west of Milepost 35. A passing motorist was so impressed that he stopped and handed one of them a folded green-back, which--upon close inspection, turned out to be a one hundred-dollar bill! Whoever said virtue is its own reward might have been a little off. Not only is the highway a little cleaner, but club coffers a mite more full! Pictured photo are, l-r, Carol Cole, Maureen Zacher-Bochius, Hannah Booth, and Louise Courtwright. Photo...

NOT SO GREAT--As this work week begins, it's a little bit wet out there, and at times, it really pours. At least there were a few breaks in the weather, but they were pretty short lived. They say drier weather is coming, so by the time you read this, you may be enjoying a very nice, dry day again. Let's hope so! Another thing that is not so great, is the fact that the internet was down all over the place. It's amazing how dependent we get on our computers for gathering information and sending communications, so when it's out, it's a huge mess....

A nervous processional marked by the tentative and generous smiles on the faces of this year’s class turned into a gleeful expression of silly string as the 34 graduates celebrated the completion of their studies at Wahkiakum High School on Friday after a two hour ceremony.
