The project is expected to go to bid in the spring, with construction occurring between July and September. The work will cause single lane closures to the highway, with flaggers during the day and a traffic light at night, said WSDOT Engineer Lori Figone....

  • Mule wrestlers claim tourney championships

Suzy Mackey Photo by Diana Zimmerman|Dec 24, 2013

The Wahkiakum Mule Wrestling team hosted 13 teams from Washington and Oregon at The Down River Challenge on Saturday. With such a large turnout the weight classes were set to 16 man brackets; this puts the wrestlers in a position of having to win three matches before they even reach the championship match. Again, the Mules were down to six wrestlers this week, but still pulled off third place in overall team points. This was possible because of the nine pins the wrestlers were able to achieve. F...

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 24, 2013

WET--As I begin this column covering the last week of this year, we're back to rain with some chilly nights, so with winter having officially started last Saturday, I guess that's pretty normal. Let's all remember to turn on those headlights when traveling in this gloomy, foggy weather, as it's really hard to see oncoming traffic, so let's drive defensively and do everything we can to have a safe holiday season. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from December 26-January 1 are Duncan Cruickshank, Steve Smith, Donald Cooper, Kohl...

    Dec 24, 2013

To The Eagle: To my Secret Santa, The card says who or why is not important. Learn something new every day. Let this be your guide. Pay it forward. Find joy in what you do. My lesson learned is humility! Although I have a lot of curiosity, you are right. The who and why are not important. The road of life led me to Cathlamet in early 2011. It has been easy to become part of this community and I have been welcomed with open arms and made many great friends through my time with Tsuga Gallery, the library, Wags and Vibes and my neighbors. I thank...

Representatives from the office of U.S Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler made an appearance at the Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners meeting this Tuesday to ascertain the needs of the local utility. “One of the things I keep my eye on is anything that is going to erode the local control of the PUDs," Commissioner Dennis Reid told Herrera Beutler’s district director, Ryan Hart. “We think the control is right where it needs to be with locally elected boards. The agency is trying to bolster low populations on the two refuges by taking deer from the Island herd, which, the agency says, is...

  • GAP founder urges community to donate

    Dec 18, 2013

To The Eagle: As I write this letter today, I am in awe of the generosity from folks (companies, churches, groups, and individuals) who are thoughtful and giving people. In October of 2012, *GAP was started. It is a program for school aged kids, from any income level, whose families want them to participate by getting extra food for weekends, school breaks, etc. The name says it all—GAP—to fill in the “gaps” when kids aren’t able to get free/reduced breakfasts and lunches at school. We decided to make GAP an acronym to stand for G...

  • Appreciation for emergency services is expressed

    Dec 18, 2013

To The Eagle: After reading the latest issue of The Eagle, we were driving to Longview when we were overtaken by the Cathlamet ambulance. Further down the highway we then saw the ambulance stopped in a pull-off on the side of the road where they were transferring the patient to the Cowlitz ambulance. Having just read in the Sheriff’s Report the great volume of calls for help of all sorts for the week of December 2-8, it makes me realize, once again, how thankful we all could be for those who answer the first call at 911, and then those who mobi...

  • Cold snap brings dinner cancellation

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 11, 2013

COLD ENOUGH?--Holy cow, has it been cold or what?! Couple the low temperatures with winds and some snow and those temperatures really took a nose dive. Out here in West Valley, I had a reading of six degrees one early, early morning, although my thermometer on the south side of the house said, eleven degrees, but either way you look at it, it was just bitter cold out there. By the time you read this, we should be back to rain if the forecasters are correct and I hate to say it, but rain would actually look good right now, even though this...
