Wow what a great turn out for the clean up day at the fairgrounds. I had around 35 volunteers and four fair board members. I would like to thank each and every one of them for their time. We mourn the death of Cathlamet resident George Hanigan. A fourth generation Wahkiakum County resident, George holds a place in the county's history. I was a kid back in 1966 when my father came home and told us about the new attorney who had grown up in Cathlamet, gone to college in Spokane and moved back to Cathlamet, to a house just down the street from us. Plans are shaping up for Cathlamet’s Bald Eagle Days summer festival July 19-21. The three-day festival is now in its 32nd year and includes the traditional parade, street fair, fireworks show and wooden boat festival. Wahkiakum County's Board of Commissioners on Monday approved a new call for bids to build a new county ferry. Bids will be opened August 6. Public Works Director Pete Ringen said bonding requirements had been changed for the second call for bids. The board rejected the only bid it received in its first round of bidding; it was over twice the estimated construction costs. "I've had a learning curve on bonding," Ringen said. Destry Roper is running for two lives. Her mother’s and her own. Destry’s mom was Sandi Nelson, a fixture at Wahkiakum sporting events. Destry can still hear her mom yelling, “Go Mules!” even though Sandi has been gone for nearly three years. Sandi and her husband, John, lived on the Island raising beef cows and their two girls, Destry and Sheena. Sandi managed the fair for years, was involved in 4H and FFA. She loved to sew. Oliver Charles Bacon, 95, of Puget Island passed away at Hospice Care Center in Longview on June 19, 2013. Oliver was born in Portland, OR on March 10, 1918 to Oliver and Esther (Hamilton) Bacon. He graduated from Bay City OR High School in 1935 and his family came to Cathlamet where he met and married Irene Olsen in 1939. They were married by his father who was an Assembly of God Pastor. Dianne grew up in Skamokawa attending school there before moving to Seattle. She worked for Industrial Bolt Supply for many years, living in the Seattle area for 50 years. The commissioners and staff recapped the situation during a June 13 meeting.
