  • Food fight continues

    Mar 21, 2013

To The Eagle, With respect to Craig Brown’s letter in support of the Food Bank in Erickson Park, I don’t understand the need for an ad hominem attack when his case can be made objectively. I haven’t found that personal comments add to any civil discourse. Bur for the record, I am not from Houston unless having lived there periodically when rotated back to the United States qualifies. Mr. Brown could have easily called me a Frog, a Limey, a Libyan or a Tunisian (or, I suppose, a Red, a subversive or a Planning Commissioner). I don’t conside...

  • Celebrate St. Patrick's Day this weekend

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 14, 2013

NICE/THEN WET-- Last week we had a few super sunny days after the morning fog went away here in Skamokawa. I heard lawn mowers going and saws running and hammering going on. Only part of the weekend was good though, as the rain moved in Saturday night and it was a pretty soggy Sunday. My daffodils are just about ready to bloom so I'm hoping that the warmer temperatures make those buds pop open. Unfortunately, it seems like they no sooner bloom and we either have heavy rains that pound them to ground, or a late frost that has them drooping. I’ll...

  • Have success with tomatoes

    Mar 14, 2013

Successfully growing heat-loving tomatoes can be a challenge in our cool climate. Your chances of harvesting ripe, red tomatoes before summer’s end can be enhanced if you plan ahead and use some or all of the tips that are covered in this article. First, and most important, is to choose a cultivar (variety) that matures fast. This is true not only for tomatoes but all vegetables you plant because our growing season is much shorter than locales to the south. When you go to buy a seedling or seed packet, look to see the number of days until h...

  • Don't forget to spring forward your clocks, columnist says

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 7, 2013

BRRR—The ground was covered with frost in West Valley on the first two days of this week, but with the sun coming out and shining for most of Monday, it made the cold nights bearable. However, it looks to be a wet one today (Tuesday), so I hope you're all getting to stay in as much as possible or have an umbrella handy! Having this rain isn't nearly as bad as in the Midwest and East Coast, where people are getting slammed with heavy, wet snow. I hope everyone’s family and friends in the storm’s path will stay safe, as it sounds rea...
