    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 21, 2013

Salmon rearing pens off Cathlamet, a site for a new food bank and water rates were among the many items on the agenda at the Monday meeting of the Cathlamet Town Council. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is moving forward with plans to develop a side channel salmon net project in the Cathlamet Channel, said Aaron Roberts, WDFW hatchery complex manager for the lower Columbia region. The states of Oregon and Washington several years ago started the Select Area Fishery Enhancement (SAFE) program and located pens to rear juvenile...

  • Food fight continues

    Mar 21, 2013

To The Eagle, With respect to Craig Brown’s letter in support of the Food Bank in Erickson Park, I don’t understand the need for an ad hominem attack when his case can be made objectively. I haven’t found that personal comments add to any civil discourse. Bur for the record, I am not from Houston unless having lived there periodically when rotated back to the United States qualifies. Mr. Brown could have easily called me a Frog, a Limey, a Libyan or a Tunisian (or, I suppose, a Red, a subversive or a Planning Commissioner). I don’t conside...

Wahkiakum Port District #1 commissioners met March 6 for further conversation with the partners of the Drop Anchor Brewery. Richard Erickson, Steve Sharp, and Andy Lea attended the meeting representing the brewery. Lea explained to the commissioners that his group was looking for a 24 by 48 foot building with four walls, a roof, a floor, and a restroom. The brewery would take care of wiring, lights, and the rest, he said. “This is pretty much an industrial building. It won’t be open to the public except for certain hours and certain days of the...

  • Have success with tomatoes

    Mar 14, 2013

Successfully growing heat-loving tomatoes can be a challenge in our cool climate. Your chances of harvesting ripe, red tomatoes before summer’s end can be enhanced if you plan ahead and use some or all of the tips that are covered in this article. First, and most important, is to choose a cultivar (variety) that matures fast. This is true not only for tomatoes but all vegetables you plant because our growing season is much shorter than locales to the south. When you go to buy a seedling or seed packet, look to see the number of days until h...

  • Writer defends food bank proposal

    Mar 14, 2013

To The Eagle: While I realize that coming from Houston might incline James Reed to shoot from the hip (“Town needs care in entering contracts” / March 7, 2013), now that he has settled in Cathlamet it might behoove him to get his facts straight before ‘firing off’ a letter To The Eagle. After scourging the Town Council for a contract that they haven’t even entered into, Mr. Reed goes on to lecture us on how a contract should be constructed to be in the best public interest. Unfortunately, town attorney Heidi Heywood is still drafting a land le...

Wahkiakum County's Health Department is looking 15 years into the future when an estimated 60 percent of the population will be 60 years old or over. "It's not just Wahkiakum County, it's everybody," Sue Cameron, county Health and Human Services Department Director, said Tuesday. "There will be a lot of dynamics our county will need to deal with." Cameron and other health officers discussed the issue Tuesday at a meeting with county commissioners as the County Board of Health. They presented a short presentation that spoke of a permanent shift...

  • Gillnetters sue state to stop new rules

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Mar 7, 2013

A group of Washington based gillnetters has sued the state Fish and Wildlife Commission to overturn regulations that would move gillnetters off the main stem of the Columbia River and sway salmon allocations further in favor of recreation anglers. The suit, filed Monday in Wahkiakum County Superior Court, asks the court to declare the regulation entitled "Columbia River Basin Salmon Management Policy Decision" invalid. The suit is similar to one filed last month in Oregon against the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission, which had adopted the...

  • What is money?

    Mar 7, 2013

It all started way back in time when someone got tired of packing around items to trade for what they needed. Things they did not have and could not grow or make themselves. Along comes some over-achiever (who shall remain nameless) with the bright idea to get everyone in their area to agree that something small and easy to carry represented the goods they were tired of packing around. From then on life became easier and the basic idea of money was established.  Money was and is an agreed upon medium of exchange.  A problem entered...

  • Town needs care in entering contracts

    Mar 7, 2013

I suppose I am one of the citizens that Councilman McNicholas was referring to when he noted that there may be some adverse public reaction to a food bank in Erickson Park. I don’t want a food bank in Erickson Park. I do not belive that it furthers any of the park’s purposes. It is a mystery to me why the food bank cannot be established on private property (unless it expects some form of special deal or support from the town). But perhaps that debate is over.  Living here for the last eight years, I find that the Town seems to reg...

  • Writer sends good luck wishes to basketball team

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 28, 2013

WET & WINDY--The storm that blew in last Friday was certainly a wet and windy one. No one could attest to that better than the driver of the semi-double trailer truck that blew over on the Astoria Bridge, halting traffic for several hours. It wasn't long before we had a small lake in our field again. It's always amazing to me how fast the ducks and geese hear about the new pond in town! Saturday had us viewing the sun off and on, so that was a nice break from the downpouring rain. Everybody I talked to was ready to head to Hawaii for...

  • Celebrate your sweetie this week

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Feb 14, 2013

WET START-- As I write this on Tuesday, it's a pretty drippy day and it looks like we're stuck in the clouds with no view for sure. But considering that the folks back east are viewing feet of snow, I won't be complaining much. The snowstorm is a horrible mess back there, and for those without power, it's truly a disaster. I certainly hope that by the time you read this, things have improved back there. SPECIAL DAYS-- Those celebrating birthdays this week are Vickie Reed, Chuck Parker, Derek Phipps, Connie Shurm, Austin Havens, Roberta...
