The Wahkiakum County Fair Board would like to say thank you to the many bingo players who attended Turkey Bingo last Friday night. The winning card holders received a big turkey or a ham for their bingo. During one game, there were four bingos at the same time and Mike Backman, our number caller, had to call a bingo run-off to determine the winner. Now that’s intense bingo! We also had two games of black-out bingo; the winners were Samantha Wright and Kim Hedges. They both received a complete dinner plus a turkey. I suspect there will be some d...
Well, folks, we are now sitting on waterfront property once again. We could conceivably row straight across the field to the Covered Bridge but the current is such that it probably wouldn’t be such a good idea. Water is over the driveway to the tune of probably six feet and will go higher with the continuing rain, so we are in for a few days. The dogs love to go for walks in this weather as they pick the small critters out of the low branches of the trees, just like candy. The wind is especially unnerving today, and likely there will be some p...

Ellen Thomason, 68, went to be with the Lord on October 28, 2012 at her home on Puget Island. She was born in Monterrey, Calif. on July 1, 1944 to Pansy (Hall) and Alan Hunt. She attended school in Spokane. Ellen came to Cathlamet in 1989 and on September 6, 1991 she married Olaf Thomason. She loved family time and clam digging; Olaf remembers her as a wonderful, caring woman and a clam digger "supremo." The end is in sight for the Wahkiakum County board of commissioners as they put together their preliminary budget for 2013. Commissioners held their final meetings with department heads and other parties with intersets in the budget process Tuesday. The Charlotte House Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Advisory Board hosted their 14th Annual Chocolate Extravaganza last Friday. This year, 30 volunteers offered their chocolate goodies to help raise funds for our program. Most of the 30 bakers are from Wahkiakum County, but there were treats coming from Cowlitz and Lewis Counties as well. The local Women’s Club will once again served coffee, and Fred Carter provided the entertainment. The money raised at this event will go towards expenses that are not covered in our contracts. To The Eagle: It is hard to make an informed decision on voting when we hear about Oregon candidates and issues and rarely about Washington. I found a great tool on the internet that helped me make informed voting decisions: www.tvw.org/2012-video-voters-guide, or you can go to the Washington State website: www.access.wa.gov and search for video voters pamphlet. Each candidate video taped a presentation. Gerry Brennan Cathlamet...

To The Eagle: Several years ago, our economic development gurus attempted to rescue our ailing golf course by slicing off a chunk of it to build golf-oriented condo units. Seemed impractical and our small course certainly didn't need an amputation, but we curmudgeons being neither golf nor economic development experts, the project proceeded. A contractor agreed to build the golf palaces, but only if we provided the sewer line to hook 'em to. This didn't seem kosher but we weren't ethics experts either, so the project rolled on. A local diggin'...
To The Eagle: No one can build a sound economy using a fraudulent money system. I don't care if you are a Democrat, Republican or any other variety of politician or official trying to do so will not work. The proof is right before your very eyes. The debt will not get smaller, the deficit will not go away, things will not get better. Even if you are the most gifted economist in the world, you will not be able to build a sound economy using unsound money. My message is simply this: it will not matter at all who we elect to any office if we do...
To The Eagle: A major thank you to The Eagle and to the Hanigan Law Office and Wahkiakum Title & Escrow for bringing us a quality weekly crossword and Sudoku puzzle. Now hanging with The Eagle lasts twice as long. Might I add, as a suggestion, do not print the answers to the puzzles on the same page as it makes cheating way too easy! Thanks! Rolly and Ginny Armstrong Cathlamet...
