Volunteers working on the drainage project between the horse barn and arena, in spite of the weather, are making some good progress. One ditch was dug, four catch basins set in place and 100 feet of four inch pipe laid out. The pipes and basins are connected, most of the ditch is filled back in and the pipe that is in place is helping to drain the inches of rain we keep receiving each day. It’s not fun to work in the type of weather that you have to wear rain gear all the time, but if you want to complete any projects this time of year, y...
DECENT--It was nice to see some dry weather last weekend after the downpours we experienced previously. It seems our county had its share of flooding, rock slides and miserable conditions last week to deal with, so a spurt of sunshine and fair weather was a welcome relief. On Monday morning our temperatures in West Valley were down in the 20s and things were frosty white. It looks like winter is coming, so we can't be too fooled by the sunshine of the day. Of course, that's not supposed to last long with things warming up and rains returning....

High water may have prevented Wahkiakum PUD commissioners from meeting in Rosburg on November 20, but it did not prevent them from discussing possible expansion of the Western Wahkiakum Water System. Meeting at the PUD’s Cathlamet headquarters, Manager Dave Tramblie reported to the commissioners on information he’d gathered to assess the potential of expanding the water system. He estimated $50,000 in out-of-pocket costs for materials. For the section of the expansion between Salmon Creek Road and Salme Road, a distance of almost a mile, the...

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner! I was very thankful that the high tides, big gusts of wind and inches of rain predicted did not cause severe flooding at the Fairgrounds. Earlier in the week I had asked some local volunteers, Bill Chamberlain, Ed Stevens and Jerry Ledtke, to help me watch for any approaching flood water problems as this storm moved through our County. By Monday afternoon the winds were increasing and the rain was pouring down and blowing sideways because of the high winds. We decided it was time to move...
WET & BREEZY--The weather forecasters said we might get some nasty weather and by golly, it did get quite blustery wet, so it was a good weekend to sit by the fire for sure. I'm not sure if you had the thunder at your house, but in the wee hours of Sunday morning, it absolutely roared, crashed and banged out here in West Valley. It looks to be a soggy Thanksgiving holiday as well, so I hope all of you that are traveling the roadways are turning those lights on, slowing down in the rain and arriving at your destination all safe and sound! As a...

The National Weather Service reported a gust of wind of 104 miles per hour was recorded on Naselle Ridge. Wind gusts tipped a semi trailer on the Astoria-Megler Bridge Monday morning, and the bridge was closed most of the day....

Helping Hand representatives discussed the matter with members of the Cathlamet town council at the council's monthly meeting Tuesday. Seeking a more peaceful place to live, Mark and Deb Howie purchased property in Cathlamet in 2006. At that time, Mark Howie was a sergeant in the Tukwila Police Department, serving the small city of 19,100 people on the south side of Seattle, and Deb drove school buses. Early on, Howie met Jon Dearmore, undersheriff in the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Department. The two struck up a friendship and found they had many common interests. The Howies had purchased a house on Columbia Street and a building on Cathlamet's Main Street. They opened an...
