Wahkiakum County commissioners handled a variety of business Tuesday, ranging from hearing a report of a rabid bat to amending the county's road construction plans to allow pursuit of more money for construction of a new ferry. Health Officer Alan Melnick reported the health department staff had investigated a report of a family's encounter with a rabid bat in the Cathlamet area. He declined to give details about the incident but said the family was from Clark County, and health staff from Wahkiakum and Clark counties worked together to...

Longview Youth Baseball earned a berth to the Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen, Maryland, next week by winning the Pacific Northwest Regional. Longview defeated Black Hills of Olympia 5-3 in the final. In the tournament, Zachary Brown of Cathlamet pitched 12 innings, giving up only to earned runs and striking out 12. Zach plays shortstop, third base, and pitches. His manager, Jack Childers said, "Zach is our horse. I can put him anywhere in the field and know he is going to get the job done." Longview Youth Baseball consists of the merger of...
Northwest residents are slightly spoiled when it comes to our seafood consumption. With access to Columbia River spring and summer Chinook, there seems an abundance of the local treat. These salmon have brought fame to the Columbia River and are considered the finest available on the market. However, much is at stake to the prized, local food source as Oregon Initiative Petition No. 21 gains steam. Though the Columbia River gillnet fishery is the sole provider of local fish to mass markets, the initiative will eliminate non-tribal gillnetting...

It’s nice to see the Wahkiakum County Fair banner hanging across SR 4 once again! This is an indication that our fair is just a few weeks away. The heavy wooden sign has also been hung over the main entrance admission gate to welcome everyone as they walk into our fair. We appreciate the Wahkiakum PUD crew and the equipment they use to handle this important task each year! We are going into high gear this week as a lot of event details are finalized. Buildings will be cleaned and decorated as we get ready for the thousands of entries that we h...
WET--As this work week begins, it's a little more than damp outside in the morning hours, and not exactly the summer type weather we were wishing we'd have by this time of year. We do seem to be getting some breaks by afternoon though, so the day isn't totally a wash! On the bright side, we don't have to worry about forest fires like they do in other states and out here in the valleys, we know our water systems will keep chugging along, so that that's the good part about seeing some of this wet stuff. For hay makers, it's been tough as the...
Wahkiakum County's political season got into full swing this week with the arrival of primary election ballots in the mail on Saturday and candidate forums Monday in Cathlamet and Tuesday in Grays River. Two write-in candidates have also made an appearance. Longview computer store owner Tim Sutinen announced a third try for election to the legislature; he is running as a write-in for District 19, Position 2; incumbent Brian Blake is seeking re-election to that position. On Tuesday, Puget Island resident Dennis Gordon sent The Eagle a letter to...
To The Eagle: I could not believe the hateful letter in last week's Eagle about homosexuality. If we were to take everything the Bible says literally then according to Exodus 21:7 "When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go free as male slaves do." I didn't know we could sell our daughters; if I tried to sell my daughter I am sure she would object quite strenuously. Leviticus 25:44 states that "Slaves, male and female, you may indeed possess, provided that you buy them from among neighboring nations." Owning slaves is against th...
To The Eagle: The letter from last week’s editorial really burdened my soul. The writer stated that Cathlamet was “doing something immoral and disgusting by allowing the PFLAG (gay/lesbian) group to participate in the Bald Eagle Day parade, spreading gay and lesbian filth.” He asked, “When are Christians going to take a stand for the truth?” First of all, I am willing to take a stand and state that I am a Christian. What that means to me is that I believe in Jesus Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, having died and was raised fr...
To The Eagle: I am motivated as I write this letter to our community paper. Wahkiakum county residents and friends nearby are always remarkable at showing others what being generous really looks like. In the many years that I have lived here, I have seen many charitable fund raisers. Every time, I am awe struck at how compassionate a town can be. People are willing to give prayers, food, money, and much more when someone is in need. I know it should not be taken for granted either. Here we go again... This is my challenge for you: Please come...
To The Eagle: A letter was published last week calling on Christians to take a stand for truth. As a leader of a church in our community, I take great caution in approaching this subject, yet I feel it is necessary to communicate that Christians are not called to publicly chastise and humiliate those we are expressing truth to. It is widely recognized among people who believe the Bible to be true in all areas that God did not intend for a homosexual relationship. They also recognize the Bible takes a stand against pride, adultery, hatred, murde...

MIXED BAG--Well, this past week we've had some great sunny days, with nice warm temperatures, but we've also had some cloudy, windy days along with showers that fell on Sunday morning. Not what hay makers were wanting to see for sure! The super warm day on Monday gave the hay makers some hope to get things done, but a cloudy Tuesday morning was making them uneasy once again. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from July 19-25 are Rick Benfit, Bev Moonen, Al McClain, Stuart Bosch, Randy Montgomery, Lesley Horman, Suzet Parker, Brian...

A deputy and a...

For a while, Cathlamet's town council meeting Monday was bad news followed by more bad news regarding the town's construction projects. First, consulting engineer Ken Alexander of Gray and Osborne, LLC, reported that the contractor installing wastewater conveyance lines under SR 4 had encountered bedrock that has stopped the boring. The contractor tried boring at a more shallow level, he said, but still bedrock blocked the passage. The problem doesn't stop the project, but the engineers are working out how to solve the problem and what the...
Tammy Peterson For Tammy Peterson, the position of Wahkiakum County Treasurer has always been a goal. “It just feels like a natural progression,” said Peterson who has logged more than 20 years of work in county government. Tammy moved to Cathlamet from Port Angeles when she was just five years old. A 1977 graduate of Wahkiakum High School, she attended Longview Business College before going to work for Wahkiakum County. “I am invested in this community. I’m not going anywhere,” said Peterson who is the chairman of the Wahkiakum Community Netwo...
Wahkiakum PUD managers and commissioners are exploring a possible billing and meter reading contract with the town. Recently, Cathlamet Mayor George Wehrfritz sent a letter to each PUD commissioner expressing an interest in contracting water meter reading and water/sewer billing and account collections to the PUD, explained PUD Commission Chair Gene Healy. Healy stated that his preliminary evaluation suggested that savings may be gained by ratepayers from both entities. PUD Auditor Wilson said the town’s utility department reads a...

Golfers from near and far teamed up to have fun and enjoy some friendly competition using the “four-person scramble” format. Winners of the several categories were: • KP (Closest to Pin) on holes 4 &13: John Collier. • KP on holes 3 & 12: David McNal...
