First, we are reminded once again of all the wonderful volunteers we have in our region. This week, we'll enjoy the county fair, largely run by volunteers. By a 3-1 vote, Cathlamet Town Council members approved a $97,000 change order for the town's wastewater treatment plant construction project. The payment will cover the cost of a new design for running the lines under SR 4. The original design called for boring a tunnel under the highway, but the boring contractor encountered rock that put a stop to that plan. Wahkiakum County commissioners handled a variety of business Tuesday, ranging from hearing a report of a rabid bat to amending the county's road construction plans to allow pursuit of more money for construction of a new ferry. It’s nice to see the Wahkiakum County Fair banner hanging across SR 4 once again! This is an indication that our fair is just a few weeks away. The heavy wooden sign has also been hung over the main entrance admission gate to welcome everyone as they walk into our fair. WET--As this work week begins, it's a little more than damp outside in the morning hours, and not exactly the summer type weather we were wishing we'd have by this time of year. Jesus beat the Life Flight on a sunny Monday morning when Mickey Paulsen, 75, of Cathlamet, made his departure from us. Mickey was born on August 26,1936 in Chehalis to Niels and Mary (Vogel) Paulsen. Mickey attended school in Chehalis. On April 14, 1960 Mickey married Jeanne Bowen, the love of his life and they enjoyed 52 years of marriage, the last 14 were the best! Delcie “Londeen” Davis passed away on June 2, 2012 in Portland. She was born on June 21, 1919 in Cherryvale, Kan., to Royal and Gertrude (Bowl) Ryan. She had lived in the local area since 1949. For a while, Cathlamet's town council meeting Monday was bad news followed by more bad news regarding the town's construction projects. First, consulting engineer Ken Alexander of Gray and Osborne, LLC, reported that the contractor installing wastewater conveyance lines under SR 4 had encountered bedrock that has stopped the boring.
