  • Problems will be solved by honesty, not politics

    Nov 3, 2011

To The Eagle: I kinda liked old Richard Nixon. He normalized relations with China and did much to tidy up the messy situation in Southeast Asia before his henchmen committed some minor felonious acts at the Watergate and he chose to stonewall and cover up. I had the solution to his problems: release the mysterious tapes, admit the foul-up and press on. But he didn't (son-of-a-gun didn't even call me) and the rest is history. We're at a similar tipping point right here in River City. Our world class Cathlamet Fire Department is required by law...

  • What's Happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Nov 3, 2011

I received some amazing information last week from Kayrene Gilbertsen. The Wahkiakum County Fair owns a double-ended Columbia River gillnet boat! The boat was built between 1913 and 1916. It has been stored for over 30 years in the Vista Park Port Shop in Skamokawa. Since we now have a gillnet boat, I spent some time reading up on these sturdy fishing boats. The double-ended gillnet boats were designed for fishing in rough water. We all know how quickly the Columbia River can become a white cap terror if you are in a small boat and the tide...

  • Have a safe and happy Halloween

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 27, 2011

HALF AND HALF--It was a so-so weekend with a soggy Saturday but a suitable Sunday; not exactly a sunny day but at least it wasn't raining, which made some outside work possible. Of course, with this being the last of October, I guess the rain shouldn't be so unexpected. As this work week began the sun was shining but temperatures were dropping, so with temperatures hovering in the 30s, we're definitely feeling that Fall nip in the air! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from October 27-November 2 are Jennifer Hall, Hoby Thacker, Mike...

  • Candidate announces write-in campaign for town council

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 21, 2011

Former Cathlamet mayor and councilmember Dick Swart announced Friday that he would be a write-in candidate for Cathlamet Town Council. Swart said he had learned that Angie Pugh, who had filed for a council position 3, has moved out of Cathlamet and thus doesn't qualify to be a councilmember. He is a candidate for that position. David Goodroe now holds the position but didn't file for re-election. In his announcement, Swart said he believes it is important for voters to elect a councilmember. Otherwise, it could take months before a replacement...

  • Local food banks need your help

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 20, 2011

NICE--It's been a pretty decent weekend as we had a drying trend show up that helped brighten everyone's spirits, I bet. I think it also brought out everybody's lawn mowers one more time and hopefully the last. While the day time temperatures were nice, it was in the mid-30s here Saturday night, definitely on the nippy side. While we may be lulled into thinking we've got time to prepare for the winter ahead, I'm thinking we better get with the program as we are into the third week of October, and heading into the fourth. Where is the time going...
