  • Council election draws write-ins

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 27, 2011

Write-in candidates have surfaced for two of the Cathlamet Town Council positions on the November election ballot. Former mayor and council member Dick Swart announced Friday that he was running as a write-in candidate for position 3. Incumbent David Goodroe didn't file for re-election, and Angie Pugh, who filed during the regular filing period, has moved out of town and doesn't qualify for office as she is no longer a town resident, Swart said. Over the weekend, some Cathlamet residents received a letter announcing Swart's candidacy and also...

  • Two good men step up for council

    Oct 27, 2011

To The Eagle: Citizens of Cathlamet should count themselves lucky: Two good men are seeking votes to fill seats on our Town Council. I am writing to endorse both of these individuals, based on their long records of laudable public service. Steve McNicholas, running as an incumbent in Position No. 1, works in the community’s interest in ways almost too numerous to list. He drives the trolley on market days and organizes volunteers to sweep streets, clean parks and help our elderly neighbors with simple home improvement. He supports our l...

  • Recommendation lacks information

    Oct 27, 2011

To The Eagle: I was surprised but also pleased to find out that Dick Swart was prepared to re-enter town governance. The news cam in separate letters to both my wife and myself. I was, at the time, perplexed by the recommendation for a write-in candidate to oppose Steve McNicholas; the letter providing no information or justification. I don't know anything about Dale Jacobson except that he may have been associated with some controversy over propane purchases. Mr. Jacobson might be a fine candidate for all I know. What surprised me though was...

  • What's Happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Oct 27, 2011

It’s been a cold and wet October at the Fairgrounds. This type of weather doesn’t bother Search and Rescue (SAR) members or their special dogs. The SAR met at the Fairgrounds last Sunday and held their dog training exercises. I was asked to be a track layer. This was something I didn’t know anything about, so was given instructions by Diane Morrow, the trainer for the six dogs in the SAR program. I was given a walkie talkie, a flag, some pink tape and four objects to hold so my scent was on them. Then I was shown where to start my track layin...

  • Cathlamet council acts on concerns

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 20, 2011

The Cathlamet Town Council gave approval to its proposed budgets for 2012 at its monthly meeting last Monday. The council's finance committee will fine tune the budget for final action at a future meeting. The council also voted 4-1 to uphold a contract with a propane supplier. Councilmember Wally Wright suggested that the contract was invalid because it hadn't been put out to bid or approved by the council, and because Mayor George Wehrfritz had signed it, he should be responsible for the expense. Clerk-Treasurer Tina Schubert responded that...

  • Priorities must be chosen carefully

    Oct 20, 2011

To The Eagle: I tried for two days to contact Pat Reese to tell her how much I enjoyed her response letter to The Eagle and how surprised I was that a nonresident of the town of Cathlamet felt that the town government was more important than the emergency medical services and fire department. Unless, of course, I misread her letter and/or she misread mine. Ms. Reese did raise an interesting point about the "county seat." Did she know that Cathlamet was the territorial (1870s) and state (1889) "county seat" of Wahkiakum County before it...

  • Green power an unreliable gamble

    Oct 20, 2011

To The Eagle: Calculating the unsuitability of solar panels and wind generators for use in public utility grid power involved Boolean algebra and Aristotelian logic and runs something like this: solar panels don't work when the sun don't shine and wind generators don't gen when the wind don't blow and selling power from such a shaky setup is real risky--kinda like handing your teenager the car keys and a six pack. Billionaire T. Boone Pickens invested a few million in wind before he figured this out, but he managed to sell out. The Obama...

  • Duck Inn closes doors and era

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 13, 2011

WET WET--It looks like we've got a wet week ahead of us with mist, drizzle, light showers, showers or rain in the forecast, which in layman's terms just means wet! We did have part of our weekend fairly dry, so it wasn't too bad. With our damper weather, I know it was time to kick on some heat, so even though the temperatures weren't always that low, the dampness just creeps in your ole bones and they just ache for some warmth! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from October 13-19 are Debbie Chamberlain, Heidi Heywood, Sami McKinley,...

  • Skamokawa PO faces closure

    Ruby Murray|Oct 13, 2011

Skamokawa – Over 40 people gathered Tuesday to protest the proposed closing of the Skamokawa Post Office. They gathered information about the process, sought to understand the chances of affecting the postal service decision and made a case for the post office as the center of the Skamokawa community. They shared some laughs and left no doubt about their commitment to work to keep the post office doors open. Skamokawa was targeted for closure because it took in less than $27,500 revenue annually and generated less than two hours of...

  • Food bank feels stress of increased demand

    Ruby Murray|Oct 13, 2011

In the face of increasing demand and fewer donations, Helping Hand Food bank is struggling to meet local need. One of two county food banks, Helping Hand is seeing more new faces and serving more people than they have in the past. “I see the same thing here that I’ve seen at every food bank I’ve ever worked at,” said Helping Hand volunteer Chuck Burton. “People would like to work. For them to need help is demoralizing. Most people don’t know how tough the economy is right now. Some of these people are disabled, but a lot can’t find a job.” Help...
