To The Eagle: In last week's edition of The Eagle, specifically in the Skamokawa News column, the author Kay Chamberlain promoted the Smoky Water Follies. She listed many cast members and included in many cases the musical and dramatic numbers they were to perform. Kay omitted one very important name. Without this name, the Follies would not have been as successful as it turned out to be. This individual's attention to every detail along with her acting and musical abilities were the reason for the show's success. The name that was left out of...

High water in the Columbia River kept the Columbia River Yacht Club home on Memorial Day, costing the Elochoman Slough Marina anticipated revenue, port manager Jackie Lea told Port District No. 1 commissioners at the regular meeting Thursday. The river is at flood stage and full of debris. Yacht club members feared they’d be traveling with what they called “submarine-sized debris” and that it would take a long time to get home, Lea said. While she said she’s always concerned that revenues are less than anticipated, the rest of the busines...
A Saturday morning fire left a Cape Horn couple homeless and damaged another house before firemen could extinguish the flames. "We lost everything," home owner Don Fullerton said Tuesday. Fullerton had come home from work a little after 2 a.m. Saturday, he said. Sometime after 5 a.m., a noise like someone throwing rocks on the metal roof of their three-level house awoke him and his wife, Virginia. The house was on fire and the heat was causing the metal roof to pop and buckle. They left in a hurry wearing only their pajamas. "I grabbed my...
The local impacts of the 2011-2013 biennial budget cuts to the State Department of Health aren’t clear yet, Health and Human Services Director Judy Bright said. Information released by the Washington Department of Health describes cuts to programs, but Bright said she still has not seen the specific amounts that the county will lose. “We have no fulltime people at this time. It will be really hard to offer services with further cuts,” she said. Some services such as family planning and oral health have already been discontinued. State...

To The Eagle: As I'm driving on my way to Long Beach, I near the Wildlife Refuge. Since I'm getting bored with all the scenery, I turn on my blinker and enter. As I wind through the tall grass and trees, I notice all the trash lying around. Then I scan my car and notice all the garbage I need to throw away. "Hmm..." I grab a crumpled McDonalds bag, look around outside then chuck it out the window. "Haha! That felt great." I pass some kids sitting around a fire pit on the beach, one of them carelessly tosses a pop can over his shoulder. "Well,...

FANTASTIC--While we were all stressing out about the rain and the wind that had been going on most of last week, come Saturday, the Dollars for Scholars Rods and Reels Rod Run met with clear skies, sunshine and just fantastic weather all day long and of course, brought with it a wonderful turn out of cars once again. Over the past three years, Rose Rendler has been a one-woman bookmobile to residents at Cathlamet’s Columbia View Care Center. Rendler greets residents and gets an update on health concerns. She knows who’s still able to read and who prefers Danielle Steele. She shakes hands with residents who may not be able to articulate a sentence but who have a big smile. She’s learned about residents’ taste in books and has found that few want blood and gore. She brings Westerns, romance and mystery. Some like to read about pioneer women, she said. R...
Although Sarah Phillips, Wahkiakum High School valedictorian, and salutatorian Brandon Fudge share a deep affection for their classmates, their history with the school is different. Phillips came to Cathlamet and entered the school district as a freshman, while Fudge has been here from the beginning. Each has good things to say about being in a small school in a small community. “You have to work at it. But you can have 150 close friends,” Phillips said. “I can’t imagine a better place to raise kids,” Fudge said. The two agreed that it was im...
To The Eagle: In the 20 plus years I have spent studying our money system, I have become aware of reforms that need to be implemented to improve conditions for people living here and also those living in other countries. I am presenting a list of them in this forum, but it will be a serial list. First, "The New World Order" is not just a slogan or phrase that is bandied about. High (and low) profile financiers around the world have been planning and making arrangements here and abroad to consolidate their control over governments. Here we will...
