  • Property owners need to pay attention to election

    Aug 26, 2010

To The Eagle: To the property owners/voters of Wahkiakum County. If you feel your property is taxed at a higher rate than its current true market value, then the November election will be extremely important to you. There are people in Wahkiakum County and the state of Washington who are only interested in the taxes received on your home/property. Other counties and states have recognized that the market value of real estate is considerably less than it was three years ago and have adjusted appraisers to match, but we are faced with opposition...

  • An apology but no changed opinions

    Aug 26, 2010

To The Eagle: I apologize personally and publicly to Tom Doumit, Town Attorney and Ruth Doumit, Town Councilwoman, if I offended or harmed them or impugned their character by my opinion letter published by The Eagle, August 12, 2010 in regard to and in opposition of the almost $900,000 town amphitheater project and its ongoing maintenance costs. While I did not name them, as I said in that letter, "The town attorney and councilwoman are both good people and I consider them to be my friends. I take no joy in writing this letter..." I have not...

  • Family to reopen Rosburg Store

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 26, 2010

Still strange weather for summer. One day you think summer missed us altogether and the next day or two it is definitely here. I am pleased to be able to let all the readers know that the Rosburg Store will reopen with new owners, though the date is yet to be determined. Norm and Joyce Bolton have purchased the property and will run it as a family business, with their daughter, Leslie and granddaughter, Cassie working in the store. I met with Norm and Joyce on Monday, and they told me that they will run the store much the same as it always has...

  • PUD board handles variety of issues

    Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 19, 2010

Wahkiakum PUD commissioners discussed a proposal to include a private group’s survey in PUD bills and heard updates on current projects at their meeting August 17. Town resident John Dees attended the meeting as a representative of a group of private citizens who have been meeting to work on Main Street revitalization. The group has sent out a survey to all Town of Cathlamet water customers, Dees said, but acknowledges that survey method missed significant segments of the county population. They would like to include their survey with PUD b...

  • Mayor: Refund $10,000 donation for parking lot

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 19, 2010

The Cathlamet Town Council voted 3-1 Monday to authorize Mayor George Wehrfritz to offer heirs of the late Effie Wright a refund of $10,000 she made to the town for purchase of land for use as a parking lot. Wehrfritz asked for council backing for his suggestion to ask the heirs if they would like a refund or if they would want the money to go into a fund for parking improvements. Council Member Wally Wright, a son of Effie Wright, abstained from voting but opposed Wehrfitz's proposal. In discussions over the proposed layout of Queen Sally...

  • Election results thin out races

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 19, 2010

Washington's voters went to the polls and have almost concluded their first ever top-two primary election on Tuesday. The top two candidates in each race advance to the general election no matter their party affiliation. Wahkiakum voters had a few of those races to settle. County Auditor and chief elections officer Diane Tischer said election workers counted 1,435 ballots on Tuesday; they reconvened Wednesday morning to count approximately 200 more as The Eagle went to press, and those tallies could change some of Tuesday's results. They'll...

  • DOE adjusts Grays/Elochoman, Cowlitz rule timeline

    Aug 19, 2010

Based on the local watershed planning unit’s need for more time, the Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) will allow more time for the rule making process in the Grays-Elochoman and Cowlitz watersheds. Instead of adopting the two water resource management rules by mid October, Ecology will let the current rule time line run out and expects to start again in 2011. Ecology uses locally developed watershed plans to write water resource management rules. The plans include information provided by local governments about growth and how much wat...

  • Town counsel responds to conflict charge

    Aug 19, 2010

To The Eagle: I write in response to George Hanigan's letter published August 12, 2010, under the caption "Town's obligations already too numerous," in which Mr. Hanigan impugns both my personal integrity and my professional competence, and that of Councilwoman Ruth Doumit. I will not allow those aspersions and the erroneous analysis that underlies them to go unchallenged and uncorrected. Mr. Hanigan claims that he has "heard the opinion expressed by several citizens" that Councilwoman Doumit and I, "as adjacent landowners... had a personal...

  • Platter responds to writers' comments

    Aug 19, 2010

To The Eagle: Frank and Donnie are appalled? (Letter to The Eagle, August12). Being a World War II veteran and because of my age, disabled, I feel for anyone that is disabled, especially young people returning from the war missing arms and legs. I made it possible to ascend the stairs to the office without falling through rotten steps. I personally replaced them with steel and concrete. I personally assembled all of the steel and wood picnic tables Frank and Donnie probably have used over 15 years ago. I'm responsible for getting a dock ramp...

  • Antique doll has history of helping

    Aug 19, 2010

Well, it seems that summer is finally here, with a vengeance. The really hot days are not my favorite. Even my sister, Sharon, who is still here from California, said it is just stifling with the humidity. Lots of folks are really enjoying all the heat, though. Nancy George’s garden seems to be doing pretty good, especially in the lettuce section. She said she has an overabundance of it. News from Naselle: It won’t be long now before the kids will be back in school with homework, sports pra...

  • Landmark cannery collapses on Cathlamet waterfront

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 12, 2010

A portion of the 140-year old Warren Cannery caved in Friday evening. The landmark structure of Cathlamet's waterfront was built in 1869. Commercial fishermen still store nets and other gear in it. Milt Doumit, one of the co-owners of the building, said an upper floor on the back side away from the river had crashed down to the main floor, dragging the roof and adjacent walls with it. However, Doumit said, much of the building remains standing, and the owners hope to be able to save those portions. "We've been rebuilding parts of it all the...

  • Immigrants' home part of Norway's heritage

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Aug 12, 2010

The ancestral home of a Puget Island family is part of a national and world heritage area in Norway. The house will be part of an area set aside to remember the area's history and the part which emigration played in it. The house was the home of the Tover (Tåvær in Norwegian) family which emigrated to the United States in the early 20th Century. They and three other families from the same area, the Wika, Nepsund and Wegdahl families, all settled on Puget Island. They came from the area around Vega, an archipelago on the coast of Norway's H...

  • Burglary dents Islander's helpful spirit

    Stevan Morgain|Aug 12, 2010

“He’s just the nicest guy,” were the first words Lynn Wilson said when she was asked about Rodney Prestegard of Little Island. Prestegard has lived and worked on Puget Island for 69 years. He isn’t sure when his family first moved to the Island. “You know,” he said, “I never really thought about it, but I really don’t know when my family moved here.” He went to school in Cathlamet and then joined the Navy in 1959. He returned to the Island after his tour of duty. “I built my house across the street over there,” he said, pointing to a little...

  • Town's obligations already too numerous

    Aug 12, 2010

To The Eagle: I agree with the position of Wally Wright and David Goodroe on the matter of the Town not being able to support the skateboard--oops, excuse me!--the amphitheater facility. Until the town can afford to maintain Strong Park, Erickson Park, J.B. Hansen Swimming Pool, B. Bradley Library, the street improvements and maintenance, the water system, the sewer system, meaningfully contribute to the Wahkiakum Historical Museum, town law enforcement, employ the people it needs to fully operate and pay its employees adequate compensation,...

  • Praise for Vista Park and Elochoman Marina

    Aug 12, 2010

To The Eagle: On behalf of the Wright and Blankenship families, I would like to thank some very helpful folks in Skamokawa and Cathlamet. First, a thank you to Bob Robinson and Janet Bryan for their great help at Vista Park with the Wright/Blankenship reunion. The success of our get-together was directly related to the new management of the park. All the reservations were handled well, and we all had great support from the park staff. A special thank you to Janet, Bob and their staff for getting everything ready for our "clans." Second, an...
