The Second Annual Cathlamet Downhill Corral, a series of internationally sanctioned longboard races, came off with few hitches last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The races brought nearly 100 competitors to the area, over twice the number that competed last year. Food and lodging business enjoyed a brief surge as competitors and their friends and family members gathered in Cathlamet and at Skamokawa Vista Park. The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday announced it was cancelling the Seventh Annual Buzzards Breath Chili Cook-Off this Saturday at the Elochoman Slough Marina. The Town of Cathlamet has submitted a detailed letter of comment on Wahkiakum County's proposed ordinance to govern application of biosolids in the county. Mayor George Wehrfritz said council members had asked him to write a letter of comment about the proposed ordinance, which will be considered at a public hearing next Tuesday, 7 p.m., in the courthouse. Lorraine Bernadette (Svensen) Bailey passed away in Renton, WA on Wednesday, August 18, 2010. She was 89 years of age. Lorraine was the last living member of the late Sidney and Esther Svensen family, pioneers of Puget Island. Her brothers Elroy and Eugene (Sonny) and sister Selma all predeceased her. Lorraine was born on Puget Island March 10, 1921. She enjoyed a childhood of Norwegian tradition living on the Svensen family farm on Welcome Slough. She was active in the First Lutheran Church. Longtime Cathlamet resident, Lilly Esther Ougendal, 93, passed away August 22, 2010 at Columbia View Care Center. She was born January 29, 1917 in Orient, S.D. to Olof and Mathilda (Anderson) Swanson. She graduated from Ilwaco High School in 1935 and moved to Cathlamet in 1940. She married Arthur Ougendal on Septemeber 6, 1941 in Ilwaco; he preceded her in death in 2007. Lilly attended United Church of Christ (Congregational) and was a member of Lettie Warren Guild. She was an account supervisor for the PUD for 19 years, retiring in 1977. She...
The annual Friends of Skamokawa Wine Tasting and Auction will take place on September 11, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Skamokawa Grange next to the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds. The theme this year is "Wines from Down Under." This is the Friends of Skamokawa's largest fund raiser of the year and is always enjoyed by both locals and visitors. I hope that everyone had a chance to stop by and enjoy the 2010 Wahkiakum County Fair. We had a great line-up of entertainment each day. New fund raising events were held during this Fair and many volunteers showed up to help the Fair Board with them. Three people sustained injuries and were taken to hospitals for treatment in a two-car collision last Thursday morning just east of Cathlamet. Samantha N. McClain, 19, underwent surgery at Oregon Health and Science University hospital last week and again early this week for her injuries. The daughter of the Brian McClains of Cathlamet, she sustained shoulder and pelvic injuries. A fund has been established in her name in the Bank of the Pacific to help with her medical costs.
