  • Odds and ends on park, election

    Jul 28, 2010

Elections The older I get, the more fondly I think of Tevye and "The Fiddler on the Roof." He wanted so much to adhere to his traditional way of life, but life wouldn't let him. Life brought change, and he had to deal with it. For those of us mired in a career of dealing with our state's tradition of a primary election in September and the general election in November, the new schedule, with the primary in August, is an unsettling adjustment. The election season should be heating up in August, but no, vote by mail ballots will be sent out at...

  • Reunions and Finn Fest this weekend

    Jul 22, 2010

CLOUDY BEGINNING--As this week began, we saw lots of clouds and many complained about not seeing the sun, but it really was perfect weather for outside work as it was dry, around 70 and it kept the "it's too hot outside" excuses away from those who were intent on getting some yardwork done. I thought we were going to have some sprinkles but we never did out here, so it was back to watering the plants. It seems weird to have to do that in an area that gets 100 inches of rain a year, but things are already as dry as dust and the ground is rock...

  • Get ready for Bald Eagle Days weekend

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 15, 2010

MIXED BAG--It depended on where you were this weekend as to the weather that you had, as some places were sunny, hot and dry and others were cloudy, misty and overcast all day and some had a little of both. Even as this work week begins, we've had showers in West Valley in the morning hours, which only seemed to let up as long as I didn't try to weed the flower beds, so if you had a sunny day, it was probably because I gave up trying to weed anything and came in the house! If anyone wanted to invent something, it would be the...

    Jul 15, 2010

To The Eagle: To the 25 families living in the town of Cathlamet who so far have completed and returned the recent survey, I thank you. This survey is designed to help restore the vitality of stores and other businesses in Cathlamet and reduce the number of vacant storefronts. It is recognized, however, that the success of businesses within the town affects everyone in the county so I am working on proper ways...

  • Speed limit ignorance will lead to tragedy

    Jul 15, 2010

To The Eagle, The posted speed limit is 20 mph in a school zone, so what's the problem on Clover Street? Posted speed limit is 20 mph, just like in a school zone and there are lots of kids. Is it that some people don't feel that the speed limit applies to them? If so, I'd love to hear their reasons. On that dead end street, can a few extra seconds be that important? I guess we will have to wait until something tragic happens before they get it. Roger Bucholtz Cathlamet...

  • Summer weather is hard to adjust to

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 8, 2010

HEATING UP--By the time you read this, we are supposed to be experiencing some hot, hot, hot weather and I can hear people complaining already. First it's too wet and cold and then it's too hot, it would have been nice to have a week of dry 75 to 80 degree weather, without going from one extreme to the other. A week ago we were down to 39 degrees one night! At any rate, make sure you take all the precautions that you should during this heat wave, as we will all need to keep our exposure to the sun limited. Wear sun hats, sun screen, drink lots...
