The Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners started Tuesday’s meeting by approving their minutes and invoices. The board accepted the resignation of Wahkiakum Fair Board Manager Bill Coons and moved on to new business. The board recertified the liquor license of Duffy’s Irish Pub in Grays River and The Oasis Tavern in Skamokawa. The approval required no action and the Board approved recertifying the licenses. A decision was made on the distribution of the PUD privilege tax. As the name indicates the tax applies to PUDs for the privilege of ope...
The Cathlamet Town Council continued with steps to impose a six-month building permit moratorium for Columbia Ridge Estates subdivision and handled other business items at its monthly meeting Monday evening. The council had adopted Resolution 280-10, imposing the moratorium, at its May 17 meeting. Following up with steps to satisfy legal requirements for the moratorium, the council held a public hearing Monday on the resolution and adopted Mayor George Wehrfritz's May 4 letter to the estates community association as a findings of fact. Town...
To The Eagle: Our mayor's bleak characterization of the Wahkiakum Welfare State in last week's Eagle seems a bit skewed, particularly when he chooses to kick around those old straw dogs "political axes" and "ideological blinders." The "shrill critics" at the meetings we attended were mostly citing real concerns from past local history or thoughtful studies from respected foundations giving mixed reviews of the 27 year history of NHAs or making polite inquiries about the apparent connections between ShoreBank Enterprise Cascade and the Chicago...
To The Eagle: When I last checked, there were 565 souls living in Cathlamet, so these are my questions about the Queen Sally park design, (The Eagle, 6/10/10). Will the amphitheater reliably drain this existing aquifer sideways, or will water pool at its base and flow directly under the building? (I've had practical experience with this from my own faulty design.) Are any hydrodynamic or soil studies contemplated? Where is there to be parking for all that ADA access? Can the Town (County?) pay a new full time employee for maintenance:...

In their regular meeting Tuesday, Wahkiakum county commissioners moved to cancel a previously scheduled June 17 forum to discuss what was to be the Columbia Pacific National Heritage Area after ShoreBank Enterprise Cascadia (SBEC) announced Friday it would no longer seek Congressional designation for the project. “They (SBEC) cited several reasons for withdrawing seeking a Congressional designation for a National Heritage Area,” said Commissioner Lisa Marsyla. “But they said the main problem was at the federal level.” Public Works Directo...

The Mass Casualty exercise last Thursday went off like clock work. Sponsored by Southwest Washington’s Region 6, Homeland Security Coordinating Council, the multi-county exercise included Clark, Cowlitz, Skamania and Wahkiakum counties. The exercise was designed to test the emergency response capabilities of each county. Public Information Officer Jerusha Kasch said as part of the exercise there was a shooting scenario. “The exercise was the example of a man who went looking for his wife in a m...
To The Eagle: Many who spoke against the proposed National Heritage Area recently evoked the county’s pioneer origins and tradition of self-sufficiency. Indeed, our area developed largely without outside help for much of its history (notwithstanding SR4 and the Puget Island Bridge, two seminal infrastructure projects built with federal money). Yet the image of Wahkiakum as a can-do frontier outpost is decades out of date. Consider two income profiles: back in 1969, according to U.S. Department of Commerce data, earned income made up 79 p...
To The Eagle: The Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board recently begged Congress to keep politics out of regulating our nation's money supply. Well, friends, that sort of advice is exactly what we don't need. Congress is contemplating some further regulation of the Federal Reserve and Wall Street. These efforts are misguided because Congress does not recognize the real cause of the financial disaster that has overtaken us. Our $14 trillion national debt and associated annual interest charges of $400 billion are a direct result of Congress...

PERFECT--No matter that it was raining last Friday or that it was just an all day soaker on Sunday, what really mattered was that on Saturday, the Wahkiakum Dollars for Scholars annual car show and sturgeon derby was basking in sunshine all day long down here in Skamokawa at the fairgrounds and surrounding area! Everyone involved had all been holding their breath all week long, so when I woke up and saw the fog, I knew we'd have sunshine soon to follow, so it worked out perfect! There were over 200 awesome cars and trucks registered this year...

SOGGY--Well, most of this past Memorial weekend was pretty damp I'm afraid. There were a few hours on a couple of days where it was not raining and not too terribly cold, but if you were out camping, you would probably not think this was the most terrific weather for doing so. I know walking around through wet grass or mud puddles is not that much fun, and neither is loading up those wet tents and things when the weekend is over, so hopefully you stayed late enough that you got to dry things out when that sunshine finally showed up about 3 p.m....

The Long Beach police and civilians who helped save Washington State Patrol trooper Scott Johnson after he was shot in the line of duty were honored at a ceremony last Wednesday. In February, Trooper Johnson, a Naselle resident, was on duty at the scene of a suspected DUI call in Long Beach when a man walked up and shot him in the back of the head, police said. Johnson survived and attended the event honoring those who helped save his life and apprehended the suspected shooter. Led by State...
