SAW THE SUN--Between the rain and the wind, we did see some sun last week and as this week began, it was nice all day Sunday. However, with rain coming in for the rest of the week, it looks like the rain coats and boots will be staying by the door. The heavy rains and strong winds on Monday afternoon made it miserable and seemed to chill me to the bone; with plenty of rain on Tuesday, it was still a time to huddle by the fire. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 29-May 5 are Shannon McClain, Connie Luthi, Wally Wright, Marcia M...

It is and it isn't. Those supporting the proposal say it's designed to benefit the region's economy through promotion of tourism. Those opposing it say it will allow unchecked interests to impose strict land use controls on private property owners. Commissioners Blair Brady and Dan Cothren listened to the debate--Commissioner Lisa...

Artist Mitzi Christensen isn’t a Northwest native. Moving to Cathlamet in 2001 from Hawaii, she said she was drawn to the area after a friend recommended she and her husband explore the area. Mitzi grew up in a small town in Northern California and has lived in Monterey, Santa Barbara and Oxnard, California before finally moving to Hawaii, where she and her husband lived for 20 years. Mitzi may be a transplant but her art proves she has the soul of a Wahkiakumite. Her art is all about water, b...

If constituents have their way, Wahkiakum County commissioners will draft a letter opposing the formation of a national heritage area around the mouth of the Columbia River. The commissioners and about 30 persons spent over 30 minutes discussing a proposed national heritage area, with constituents saying the proposal is a thinly veiled effort for proponents of the proposal to take control of land use in the region. Commissioners said they shared concerns of the constituents. They said they would study the proposal, which is currently the...

To The Eagle: There's quite a few letters written to The Eagle about the Port District which brings to my attention regarding property tax. I thought property tax was to pay for schools, police, fire departments and roads; so why are we paying tax to the Port District? They seem to be self sustaining enough to take care of its own, especially the marina. Toni Below Cathlamet...

Proponents felt the national heritage program would make the region known for its particular...

The Associated Press reported that the state board of appeals sent the case back to Clatsop County to resolve questions over whether the project is too big for the site, and whether enou...

Revenue from...
To The Eagle: Heritage area??? Be very cautious in anything called special planning area, heritage area, etc. What it does is eventually form another layer of bureaucracy in the use of your property. Example: Apply for building permit with county. County determines it could be in heritage area, then it goes to that board who then takes years for that board to decide if it is in the heritage area or will have impact on same. In other areas with like heritage or whatever they may be called districts, it is not unusual to take five to eight years...

THE LION ROARS-- We definitely had Spring and April arrive with a roar; wind, rain and power outages were the norm the last few days. It's been boots and galoshes weather rather than sleeveless dresses and cute sandals, which we all thought we'd wear for Easter! Spring sprung a leak, I believe. Let's hope some nicer weather arrives soon as these low and mid 30 degree temperatures at night are keeping the flannel sheets on much longer than expected! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 8-14 are Tim Parker, Kylie Thacker, Paul Tos...
