  • Lady Mules defeat Ilwaco, Naselle

    Diana Zimmerman|Sep 21, 2017

The Wahkiakum Mules volleyball team won two more non-league games this week and brought their record to 4-1. After losing the first two sets last Thursday against Ilwaco, the Mules turned on the heat and won the next three to take the match. Set scores were 17-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-10, and 15-11. "We started out really flat," Coach Kayli Hurley said. "No fire. We were just going through the motions and slowly at that. After a heart to heart between sets two and three, my girls finally released...

DAMPNESS--It was great to have a little bit of moisture this past weekend, although I'm not sure everyone agreed as there were a lot of things going on, like people camping and fancy cars and trucks headed to car shows, that would rather have had it dry. The beginning of this week was due to be dry and warm, while a cool down and maybe even a few more showers may be falling upon us by the time you read this. However, as we all know, the weather is subject to change from one day to the next. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Sept....

    Kay Chamberlain|Sep 7, 2017

HOT!--I don't know about you, but if the rain shows up during the latter part of this week like they are forecasting, I will be very relieved, as these high temperatures have just been miserable for a lot of folks without AC and it makes working outside just about impossible. Of course, as seen by the fact that there are fires burning all over our PNW, some rain would be welcomed for those as well, and the cooler/damper weather conditions would certainly be welcomed for all those firefighters who have been battling blazes all over Washington,...

  • Memorial for Pat Potter set for September 13

    Trudy Fredrickson|Sep 7, 2017

It looks like Mother Nature must be mad at something or everything. Unprecedented hurricanes, flooding and fire all over the country is affecting so many people. My prayers go out to the families who are being affected by these catastrophes. Prayers and thanks as well to the firefighters (including my cousin, Tom Hammonds who is responding to the Eagle Creek Fire as I write this), and all the other responders and volunteers who are helping out. Be aware also that the smoke and ash in the air can cause problems with breathing, especially childre...

The Comets took an 8-0 first quarter lead, but the Mules did the rest of the scoring to claim a 22-8 victory. After throwing five incomplete passes, Comet quarterback Cole Dorman connected with Donny Edwards who beat a defender for a 22-yard touchdown play with 1:12 left in the first quarter. Dorman ran the...

  • Mules to play first football game Friday

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 31, 2017

TOASTY--If you like the hot weather, you have obviously been enjoying this latest band of heat that has shown up this week! With temperatures in the upper 90s, this summer weather is not ending and it has led to a real dry one for sure. Fire danger is high and with multiple wildfires still burning out of control, officials are warning us to continue to honor the burn ban and be very vigilant with any hot items, which have the potential to cause/start a fire. As always, make sure you and your animals are getting plenty of water, shade and...

  • Football starts Friday, school on Tuesday

    Trudy Fredrickson|Aug 31, 2017

I am really ready for some rain and cooler temperatures. This is not my cup of tea. On another note, the old adage “the best laid plans” did not work out so well for me this past two weeks. I had company come back the weekend before the eclipse, and the traffic was so bad at my granddaughter’s that I never would have made it in time for the historic event. So, my sister and I, with our cousins, watched it from Grays River, and it was a sight to behold. Then we had another rather nasty dilemma and I flew my nephew who is a plumbing contr...

The local 2017 high school football season gets underway this Friday, 7 p.m., with the Wahkiakum Mules heading to Naselle to take on the Comets in the KM Trophy Game. Knocked out of last year's Class 1B playoffs, the Comets hope to use their size and speed to make a run deeper into the playoffs. The Mules are coming off of two seasons in which the majority of players were underclassmen. With good quality in skill positions, they hope to make their own run into the Class 2B playoffs. It will be a...

NICE--This past weekend's weather was great, and other than a chance of sprinkles one day this week, we are still going to be basking in the sunshine they say, so I hope you're all enjoying this string of sunny weather. However, there are a few folks who aren't thrilled with all this drynes, as those running low on water or who are already out around here, are probably hoping for some rain! With fire danger extremely high, I'm guessing fire fighters are wishing for some as well. As always, be...

  • Successful blood drive gathers 41 units of blood

    Trudy Fredrickson|Aug 17, 2017

It has been an interesting week for me. I had a message on Facebook out of the blue from a cousin and his wife asking if I planned to be home the following day. We had probably not seen each other for 25 years, and they were on their way from California to Centralia to visit one of their sons. It was wonderful catching up for a few hours before they were off again with the promise of making this their summer destination now that they are retired. I had no idea they had family so close. Then my son, Carl and his girlfriend decided to come down f...
