  • Cooking classes offered at GRVC

    Trudy Fredrickson|Sep 15, 2016

I’m writing this week’s column at the kitchen table of my son and daughter-in-law in “sunny California.” Believe me, if I didn’t have family and friends here, I wouldn’t be either. So many people on top of each other, so much traffic and construction everywhere. That said, I am having a wonderful visit with everyone. It has been a very long time since I visited the place we raised our children. I am making a point of seeing how things have changed and those things that have remained the same since we left nearly 17 years ago. Kind of bittersw...

  • Wine tasting and auction on Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Sep 8, 2016

CHANGED--We had some good weather and some wet weather Labor Day weekend and it sure depended on where you were as to just what you got. While we had some downpours here in West Valley and put on our rain jackets and sweatshirts to head to Cathlamet, when we got there, it was sunny and warm and people were walking around in t-shirts, short pants and tank tops, so a big difference in just a few miles! Some who traveled to the coast saw some brief cloudiness and then nothing but sunshine later on, while other areas were cold and socked in all...

    Kay Chamberlain|Sep 1, 2016

SURPRISE--We started off last Saturday pretty wet here in West Valley, which was a bit of a surprise to me, as I had heard Astoria might get some drizzle but didn't think it would come inland quite so much, but hey, we'll take all the moisture we can get, and I didn't have to water the outside plants! For those not expecting any rain at all and who left windows down or other things outside, well, it was not a welcome sight. Considering we had some super hot days last week, this cooler batch of weather suits me just fine; might even be feeling...

    Trudy Fredrickson|Sep 1, 2016

It’s hard to believe this year is nearly gone. What happened to summer? The leaves are already turning color. I hate to admit it but I’m really looking forward to fall, with cooler temperatures and a fire in the wood burning stove. Maybe I’m weird, but I do love the weather here, even the rain. News from Naselle: School is in full swing, homework, sports practice and competition has begun. New teachers, new students and a full schedule of events for the 2016-17 year. Let’s make this another good one for everyone involved. Sports calenda...

  • Fair princesses hard at work with varied events

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 11, 2016

It's all about the bling, people. On Saturday, the four young women vying for the honor of 2016 Wahkiakum County Fair Queen and some of their friends and family were on hand for a car wash and bake sale at the Bank of the Pacific in Cathlamet. The girls weren't wearing their tiaras that day, but they were laughing and having a good time after four hours of washing vehicles, with two more hours to go. Kyrah Scuito is the daughter of John and Wendy Scuito of Skamokawa. She's 17 and about to start...

    Trudy Fredrickson|Aug 11, 2016

Not that I dislike this cool drippy weather, but I think Mother Nature decided to cancel summer for this year. At least it was nice last Saturday afternoon for Poul and Zenaida Toftemark’s Pig Roast and Potluck. It looked like everyone had a wonderful time, as usual. News from Naselle: The School Board for the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District will meet on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., for their regular monthly meeting. • Finnish folk festival has an air of family

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 4, 2016

The Finnish American Folk Festival had an air of reunion about it. There were three class reunions and Naselle residents and relatives from near and far greeted each other and chatted in hallways, classrooms, at tables, at the market and in line for food. Even new visitors made connections. No one seemed to be a stranger. According to Anita Raistakka, 1,450 people signed the registration books, though not everyone who attended signed. There were visitors from 24 states and four foreign...
