  • Schools collect 1,075 lbs. of food

    Trudy Fredrickson|Dec 31, 2015

My apologies to the readers for not entering a column last week. My husband spent five days in the hospital for what we had originally thought was pneumonia and it turned out to be more complicated than that. He is on the mend now and we are a little better educated on what some symptoms can indicate. A word of advice to those of you with health issues: Keep a journal of everyday actions and always take it with you to a doctor visit. It makes answering questions much more simple and accurate. Sometimes the simplest entries can indicate a...

  • Tigers tame Mules

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 24, 2015

Wahkiakum Mule senior Joey Moore spent so much time on the floor in last Thursday's game against Napavine that someone should give him an honorary floorboard if the court is ever replaced. Unfortunately, his bloody knees and assured bruises weren't enough to make up for the damage done by the Tiger's Wyatt Stanley. Stanley, a big physical player, put his head down and scored 29 of his 37 points in the second half, and the Tigers won 77-64. Ryan Quigley, who has turned out to be a consistent...

  • Bazaar at fairgrounds this Saturday, 9 a.m.

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 17, 2015

LESS INTENSE--As this work week begins, the weather is a little calmer than it has been, but then, it wouldn't take much considering last week was just totally wild! With flooded roads, a tornado in Battle Ground, local roads and highways closed from water or slides, plus major highways, like I-5 in Woodland closed due to a huge slide, and Hwy 12 closed indefinitely, plus many accidents that were water related, well, it was just a ridiculous, wild and crazy weather week. There were even sand bags used on Puget Island at some homes, so the...

  • Floods, slides leave impact on Westend

    Trudy Fredrickson|Dec 17, 2015

It looks like this last storm has inconvenienced quite a few in our neck of the woods. I see that Covered Bridge Road has a pretty serious slide, with one lane collapsed and the other lane questionable near the Barr Road intersection and is closed. Also Shannon Road is closed due to a section of the road collapsing. Lots of other areas were seriously affected by the flooding and mud debris. We have about three inches of silt on our driveway after the 3 1/2 feet of water receded. Let’s hope this is about it, and we can have a calmer winter f...

  • Mules come up short in league games

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 17, 2015

The Wahkiakum Mules boys basketball team suffered loss after loss last week, but their game against Mossyrock on Saturday proved that if they focused on the little things, they could hold their own. On Tuesday, the Mules traveled to Randle to play Morton/White Pass, a team that has not yet lost a game this season. The Mules fared no better, losing 30-73. Ryan Quigley led scoring with 16 points. Joey Moore, Zach Brown and Cody Terpsma added four more apiece. Hank Ferguson scored two. Stats were n...

  • Dinner at Skamokawa Grange Hall Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 10, 2015

WET ENOUGH?--I hope you are still afloat wherever you are, as we certainly have had some rain coming down, along with some blustery moments as well. I am thinking we should move the holiday season to summertime, as it seems we have to battle a ton of weather issues every year as we plan our gatherings, or cancel our gatherings, due to nasty weather events. Ok, I know that isn't going to happen, but as you travel to and fro to all the various family doings or community doings, be extra vigilante on the roadways, as standing water can yank your...

  • First rain, then floods put damper on activities

    Trudy Fredrickson|Dec 10, 2015

Rain, rain, flood, flood. Here we go again. This has certainly been a wet beginning to the holiday season. We are once again house bound for a few days, not that I really mind as we are high and dry, well stocked and safe with our critters. It doesn’t look like the weather is going to get much better for a few days, so I hope other folks are prepared. There were trees down and even a wash out of one lane on Covered Bride Road near Barr Road on Tuesday. Be safe and check on your neighbors and their pets. News from Naselle: Here is the sports c...

  • Flea market will be Saturday at Fairgrounds

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 3, 2015

LAST MONTH--Here we are, the last month of the year, which seems impossible, but yet, here it is! Beings it's only 22 days until Christmas, I bet you're rushing around and getting that shopping done and getting all set for the big day. Of course, you savvy online shoppers just click a few buttons and have things delivered to your door, which certainly beats fighting all that traffic and long lines at the check out stands. But then, maybe you're like me and you like to browze around for that gift that's "just right" for that special person in...

  • Mule boys cool Comets 54-40

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 3, 2015

It was a much quieter affair than it was 30 years ago when the rivalry between the Mules and Comets ran strong. The upper bleachers weren't even pulled out on Tuesday when the 1B Naselle Comets came to town to open the boys basketball season with the Wahkiakum Mules. The Mules won the game 54-40, taking a 15-6 first quarter lead and never looking back. The Mules had four players in double digits. Zach Brown led the team in scoring with 16 points. • Happy Thanksgiving wishes to everyone

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 26, 2015

COLD ENOUGH?--We were happy to have the big wind and rain event here subside, and bright, clear, starry skies return with some sunny days to boot. However, the plunging temperatures were not to my liking and much colder than predicted, so while some hovered in temperatures at the freezing mark, out here in West Valley, we plummeted down into the teens-brr! Needless to say, this caused some extra angst just before the holiday weekend and made for some sleepless nights as we worked to keep water pipes from freezing and our homes nice and toasty!...
