November 12, 2009 George R. Haataia George Robert Haataia died October 11, 2009 in Olympia, aged 71. He was born July 5, 1938 to George and Miriam Haataia in Cathlamet and graduated from Naselle High School in 1956. He was a respected survey engineer for King County and worked throughout Washington. He is survived by daughter Rachel and her husband Stephen; brothers Gilbert of Naselle and Marvin of Battle Ground; and sister Darlene of Kelso. Local runners fared well in the state Class B Cross Country meet last Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course, Pasco. Naselle Comet Cramer Smith, a sophomore, finished in 18th place in 17:56. Team mate Nathan Reitz, a junior, was 28th in 18:21. For the Wahkiakum Mules, Bradley Pugh, a senior, finished 25th in 18:18 and Collan Riley, a sophomore, finished 52nd in 18:56. The league-leading and fourth ranked Adna Pirates shut out the Wahkiakum Mules 27-0 in a Central League football game last Friday at Adna. The win clinched the league championship for the Pirates; the loss left the Mules in a battle with the Mossyrock Vikings for the third and final playoff berth from the Central League. Runners from the Wahkiakum Mule and Naselle Comet cross country teams will compete in this Saturday's state championship race. The top four teams and 20 individuals in the boys race and the top two teams and 10 individuals in the girls race advance to the championships on Saturday at Pasco. Write-in candidates fared well among Wahkiakum County voters in Tuesday's general election. George Wehrfritz won the Cathlamet mayoral election as a write-in, defeating former Councilor John Hannah 107-58. In the race for a position on the Naselle/Grays River Valley School District board of directors, Position 2, write-in Michelle Condon defeated Mike Queener 202-151 in combined Pacific and Wahkiakum County voting. Wahkiakum County commissioners decided Tuesday to wait another week before signing a letter to Governor Christine Gregoire that will air criticims of the chair of the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission, Miranda Wecker of Naselle. On September 20 from 2-5 p.m. the Appelo Archive Center in Naselle will host the opening of a special display on historic handwork art, "Heirloom Treasures," featuring pieces on loan from local families. The Naselle School Board of Directors appointed Dr. Rick Pass of Astoria to a one year contract as superintendent at their meeting on August 26.
