The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team opened the Class 2B District Tournament Monday with a 75-59 loss to the Pe Ell Trojans. On Saturday, time and location to be determined, the Mules will play the loser of the Naselle Comet-Napavine Tiger game played last night (Wednesday) after The Eagle had gone to press. A bill has been introduced to legislature that could save the Naselle Youth Camp from closure. The Sentence for Treatment bill would be an alternative for juvenile courts. While NYC is not named in the bill, it is the intended location for the direct to treatment option. Bill supporters say this would make fiscal sense for the state which is facing supreme cuts due to a budget shortfall. On Sunday, the Appelo Archive Center opened the C.A and Agnes Appelo Memorial Library in Naselle. The center, owned by the Wahkiakum Community Foundation, rents the space for the library. The possible Naselle Youth Camp closure was the main issue at the Naselle-Grays River School Board meeting January 20. Superintendent Alan Bennett said if the camp were to close, there would be a major change in staff in the district. The Appelo Archive Center, operated by the Wahkiakum Community Foundation, will officially open the new C.A. and Agnes Appelo Memorial Library on February 1 with an Open House from 2-5 p.m. Located in the Appelo Plaze in Naselle at 1052 SR 4, the new library showcases the books collected by members of the Appelo family for over 60 years. Our Haunted House fundraiser was a lot of fun, with screams of terror as well as delight, as families came together to enjoy the 4-H bake sale, carnival games and haunted house.
