It feels like fall to me. It was cold this morning (Tuesday). Wet mornings, fog, plants nearing their last days, kids back at school and our lives move on into a new season. Fall is often a time of dying leaves, but it can also be a time of new blessings, like warmth from a good fire and the love of old friends. May God bring a season of blessings to all of us, no matter what season we are living in our lives. "All good things around us are sent by Heaven above." Amen. Photo of the Week: Last...

Photo of the Week: The Wahkiakum PUD crew came to my house last week to remove an aspen tree that was growing too near the power line in my yard. Three very capable men came, Mark, Frankie and Scott. Three boys were there to help also, my yard helpers who have been another great crew, Theo, Gus and Bowen Burkhalter. They happened to be working in my yard the second day that the PUD crew came when they brought the chipper/mulcher machine and mulched the tree within 30 minutes. It was a shock to...

One week from today, August 25, will be September 1 and the first day of school for students at Naselle/GRV school. It’s been a short summer for many of us because it seemed summer didn’t truly start till mid-July. The helianthus and dahlias are blooming so that’s a sign of late summer. Photo of the Week: As I left Finn Fest, I stopped to take a photo of Valley Bible Church’s flags on their sign. I have seen both flags, our national flag and the flag of Finland, several times hanging there....

This year, summer feels more like spring or fall to me, but after spending two weeks inside experiencing covid for myself, and the nasty medicine to fight it, I will take any season. I am feeling much better this morning while sitting out in the yard with Ben dog with flowers and birds telling God how grateful I am. I had a couple days that were scary for me because the side effects from the medicine seemed worse than the illness itself. I know there have been others ill with covid recently, so...
Last week turned out to be an exciting week for Eagle staff. You should know that we plan ahead to make sure we cover local events, such as the Finnish American Folk Festival that occurred July 29-31 in Naselle. Reporter Diana Zimmerman already had a series of interviews planned for the weekend, but western Wahkiakum/Naselle correspondent Karen Bertroch said she would be happy to cover the event for The Eagle. I have a compromised immune system and avoid crowds. And when Friday rolled around, I became concerned about my health. My lower left...

I am so sorry to have missed last week's Dispatch. I was hit hard by Covid just after Finn Fest. I am embarrassed to say it was my own fault because being in a big, concentrated crowd from all over the world, one might think I would have considered wearing a mask, but no. Like so many of us who had begun to think our sweet little oasis was forgotten by the Covid critters, I was quite mistaken. I finally called our dependable ambulance at Grays River Fire Department and they transported me to my...
The 20th Naselle Finnish American Folk Festival took place July 29-31 after a four-year hiatus. There was an entertaining array of music, displays, food, goods for sale and an enthusiastic crowd. Illness postponed this Eagle coverage of the event (see pages 2 and 5), but we hope you'll enjoy these photos by correspondent Karen Bertroch....

Photo of the Week: Justin Laine sent out a great family shot of everyone in the family at a Finn Fest six years ago. The girls' costumes are so sweet. This shot reminds us how fast time passes and how quickly kids grow. I hope all families will try to attend for some period of time. When you are there, do visit the Tori room where vendors have all sorts of Finnish art and/or fun things for sale. Check out the Appelo Archives vendor booth. They have just received newly published books that are a...

So it was for the July meeting of the school board of Naselle GRV School District community. One school board member was absent, Amy Chadwick. No one from the community attended it, but one, this reporter. Before the...
