Kenneth (Kenny) William Setala passed away May 4th, 2022 with his family by his side. Kenny was born on March 25, 1938, in Astoria, Oregon to John and Pauline Setala. Kenny's childhood years were spent on the family farm in Rosburg, WA on Eden Valley Road where he began his lifelong love of animals. Dear Neighbors: (written on Monday) We all love July 4 for any number of reasons. I like having a long weekend to work in my yard and watch the fireworks down valley at the Zimmerman farm. They always have great fireworks. I sat on a lawn chair in my front yard and watched a long time, but I realized the echoes were exciting all by themselves. As of July 1, Valley Cup Espresso in Naselle has changed hands and is now called Naselle Coffee. After 10 years, Gail Queener sold her latte stand to Hannah Footh who will now make coffee drinks for residents and visitors who travel through Naselle, or buy groceries at Okie's Market or watch a ball game nearby. To The Eagle: I recently learned that Port 2 decided to name the Skamokawa Church building after Carlton Appelo. I know he was actively supporting Port 2 and he really liked Vista Park. On June 21, the Naselle/Grays River Valley School Board of Directors met with discussions ranging from the official agenda to issues and questions raised from the public. The first portion of the meeting followed the usual openings with one exception. Dear Readers: We live in a busy place this summer with a solstice that changed our weather almost at midnight when we suddenly went from a wet, cool day to a blazing hot sun that lasted several days, or so it seems. MAYBE NICE?--As we have seen, our June weather is definitely Spring weather; as in “springing a leak from every cloud” kind of weather! They say we may be in for a few dry days this coming week, but with temperatures in the low to mid-60s, it’s definitely not going to be setting any heat records. However, summer officially begins on June 21, which is scheduled to be dry, so we’ll hope that’s the beginning of our “real” summer so that our farmers can get those crops to grow and get them harvested before they either drown or rot. Exciting Summer News: I learned at the Chamber of Commerce office last week that our two award winning robotics teams from both high schools, Wahkiakum and Naselle/Grays River, will be the Grand Marshals for the Bald Eagle Days Parade in Cathlamet this summer. Local robotics teams returned from Washington D.C. and Maryland with awards, trophies and some wonderful memories after touring the capitol and competing against 137 teams from around the world in the SeaPerch underwater robotics competition last weekend. The Naselle Bubbleheads placed sixth overall in the open class at the international event. All over our west county area, the high grass is winning. Some farmers have started their first cut of the summer, but then the rain keeps coming and messes with the whole process. But on the other hand, Hank Nelson's calves are growing so fast we can see it driving by on the highway. Tyson Vogeler has goslings "on steroids" following him around all day.
