Jack Leavitt, who graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 2017, and has been a longtime volunteer firefighter in the county, was recently voted by his peers to be Rookie of the Year for Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue. Wahkiakum County should receive $1.7 million in revenue this year from harvest of timber on state managed trust lands, the Department of Natural Resources reported Tuesday. The estimate is a bit lower than the $1.8 million reported last October, said DNR Regional Manager Padraic Callahan. Cathlamet resident Terry Heagy died March 7 in a two-car collision on SR 4 east of Stella. Heagy, 70, was a passenger in a Honda CR-V driven westbound by Chase Heagy, age 20, also of Cathlamet. According to the Washington State Patrol, a Ford F-150 pickup driven eastbound by David Florek, 35, Kelso, crossed the centerline and collided head on with the Heagy vehicle.
