Naselle Grays River Valley School Board's meeting for August was held at the Grays River Fire Hall just off SR4 on Hull Creek Road. Residents of Butler Street petitioned the city council for a remedy for the condition of their street. The homeowners said that the street, which is a patchwork of cement, asphalt and various repairs is desperately in need of replacement. The council agreed but debated how to proceed. Wahkiakum County commissioners met as usual on Tuesday. In public comment Kay Walters reported on a successful Wahkiakum County fair. She said that the market sale brought in a total of $26,000 and that 420 fair passes were sold on Thursday alone. The commissioners approved the establishment of an independent information technology department to handle increased internet related work including security, phone systems and the county's emergency communication system. Lakeside Industries completed a paving project at County Line Park on Tuesday. The final portion of the project cost $14,968.03. The Funky Car Show drew a crowd to the River Mile 38 taproom on Saturday. The VWs were a hit, taking first and second place. According to RM38 co-owner Javier Sanchez, the car show started in 2017 as an anti-car show, for all types of ugly, unfinished, or project cars. OLYMPIA – The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has banned rule burns, permit burns, and all campfires on lands it protects throughout its Pacific Cascade Region, as hot, dry summer weather has increased wildfire danger in the area. Wahkiakum County Port 1 commissioners approved several bids for coming projects at their August meeting last Thursday, and heard some good news about sailing races planned for next year. The biggest news came toward the end of the meeting when Port Manager Todd Souvenir said that the Willamette Sailing Club decided to move their annual Al Morris Memorial Regatta to Cathlamet. The Wahkiakum County Commissioners approved a number of recommendations in less than an hour Tuesday. First up, was the approval of $69,750 to repair a retaining wall at the Wahkiakum clinic. Next was the renewal of the Workforce Southwest Washington reimbursement contract not to exceed $90,000. The Cathlamet Town Council met Monday in regular session. County Commissioner Lee Tischer attended by phone and asked for an update on the high school sidewalk and the Erickson park skatepark. Mayor David Olson said that the planning and funding for the sidewalk is done and construction should begin by October. The effort to construct the sidewalk started three years ago. On Tuesday, Columbia Land Trust transferred responsibility for a new bridge on Risk Road to Wahkiakum County. The bridge was built last year as part of a project by Columbia Land Trust and funded by Bonneville Power Administration to improve habitat and rectify a problem with flooding in the area. On August 3, one Cathlamet resident was on her daily walk around the track at Wahkiakum High School when she noticed what appeared to be a female osprey in distress at the base of its nearby nest. Thinking it had been shot, she and her partner made a call to the Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Department, which forwarded the concern to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
