    Cathlamet’s elected leadership is planning ahead. Town council members spent the bulk of their April 3 meeting in workshop mode to discuss the first draft of a new comprehensive plan. The 80-page draft was prepared under contract with the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Council of Governments. It replaces a previous plan approved back in 2002. Once updated and officially approved, a new comprehensive plan will require updates every 10 years.   • Robotics students fundraising for SeaPerch International Challenge trip

    On Friday, high school and middle school students in the Wahkiakum Mecha Mules Robotics Club qualified for the SeaPerch International Underwater Robotics Competition, which takes place in Maryland in May. Wahkiakum School District will cover airfare for the seven member team and coaches headed to the competition, but the team is hoping to raise about $12,000 to support the trip, which will include a visit to Washington D.C., as well as other SkillsUSA and FIRST Tech Challenge competitions....

  • Spring Chinook fishing extended on Columbia River below Bonneville Dam

    With catches lower than expected in March and early April, the recreational spring Chinook salmon fishery on the Columbia River below Bonneville Dam will see four additional days of fishing, fishery managers from Washington and Oregon announced Tuesday. Commissioners agreed to increase the port manager's salary to $67,400 per year; they also passed a resolution continuing delegation of authority for the port manager to act for the district in emergencies and in other specified circumstances.     Jack Leavitt, who graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 2017, and has been a longtime volunteer firefighter in the county, was recently voted by his peers to be Rookie of the Year for Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue.     Wahkiakum County should receive $1.7 million in revenue this year from harvest of timber on state managed trust lands, the Department of Natural Resources reported Tuesday. The estimate is a bit lower than the $1.8 million reported last October, said DNR Regional Manager Padraic Callahan.
