The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners met briefly on Tuesday to listen to reports, including the final one from Dave Tramblie, who is retiring from his position as general manager this week. Tramblie said that customer work was keeping the PUD busy, but they were taking some time to tackle a project for the Western Wahkiakum Water System, and would be replacing pipe on the Altoona/Pillar Rock bridge, along with more pipe about 300 feet to the south of the structure. He said that the PU...

In opening public comment, a speaker described discomfort caused by logging trucks passing by his house and raising dust, and of sediment washing into a nearby creek, which is eroding his property. He described barriers to obtaining permits to address the erosion and wondered why timber companies can obtain permits so easily. Commissioner Dan Cothren responded that timber companies do go through the permitting process and must...

Others have received calls from someone who is not a WHHS employee and is asking for information. These are scams designed to prey on people’s good will, according to WHHS. According to t...

According to town Council Member David Olson, the design and fabrication of the signs were made possible thanks to a "generous" grant from the Lewis & Clark Trail Stewardship Endowment. He expressed appreciation for the "cooperation and goodwill of the Chinook Indian Nation including Tribal...
– A section of the lower mainstem Columbia River below Bonneville Dam will close to all salmon fishing beginning Sept. 4, state fishery managers from Washington and Oregon announced Sept. 2. The closure, which follows a separate closure on Chinook retention at the Buoy 10 fishery last week, is meant to protect Chinook making their way upriver and into lower Columbia River tributaries. Catch data indicates that the area from Tongue Point/Rocky Point (Astoria) to the Warrior Rock (St. Helens, Orel,) line is exceeding catch projections, and the cl...

By Diana Zimmerman One particular sport fisherman was looking forward to spending the early hours fishing on the Columbia River last Thursday when he stepped out on D Dock at a busy Elochoman Slough Marina to find his 20 foot Northwest aluminum boat in the drink. It was a rough way to start the day. Todd Souvenir, maintenance manager at Port 1, was already out on the river hoping to hook something. What he caught was a call, around 7:30 a.m., from the thwarted fisherman. "I hate to call you and...

Last week Ken Johnson, CEO at Wahkiakum West, announced that they are working with three distinct issues at the company. That work is currently being done at night when calls are less frequent. This work is pending. However, the old equipment appears to have settled down for now, Johnson...

The effort to reconstitute the Community Center in Cathlamet took a step forward Tuesday at a meeting of center supporters and town and county officials. The center is operated on a cooperative agreement of the county and town. The county has been responsible for the manager's position, and because of funding constraints, has tied that position to programs funded by outside agencies. The most recent manager left the position last spring, and since then, center use has largely been limited to previously existing programs led by volunteers. Feari...

The Buoy 10 fishery on the lower Columbia River will close to Chinook salmon retention beginning Friday, fishery managers from Washington and Oregon announced today. Strong fishing effort at Buoy 10, combined with sustained high catch rates, meant the fishery reached its allowable impacts on Chinook earlier than expected, according to Ryan Lothrop, Columbia River fishery manager with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). Previously scheduled to remain open until Sept. 6, the section of river from Buoy 10 to the Tongue...

District personnel collected petitions signed by over 60 percent of residents of the area in question supporting the annexation. State law allows a county commission to approve such an annexation without a public vote...
