DRY SPELL? I understand that there are a lot of dry days in the forecast this week, and I hope you’ll be able to get out and enjoy them. • Corn chatter

    Chip Bubl|May 1, 2025

Corn and tomatoes are favorite garden crops in this area. We all get anxious and want to get those plants in the ground, often before the weather really has cooperated. This year might be a year to gamble on early planting. Many garden soils are ready to be tilled. Before planting, add 4 pounds of actual nitrogen (organic or synthetic) per 1000 square feet of garden (that is the equivalent of 40 pounds of a fertilizer where the first number is “10”, like 10-20-20). The new supersweet corn varieties need very warm soil at planting. They are mor...

This week, we have a mixed bag with some rain possible on a couple of days, cloudy but dry weather for a few days, and some in-and-out sunshine for a couple more. It looks like there's...

  • Westside Stories

    Lisa Yeager|May 1, 2025

My grandpa, Edwin Wirkkala, was one of the most important men in my life. A few years before his death, since I was living in Colorado, I committed to visiting him at least every six months. Thankfully, with the support of my husband, a job that allowed me to travel, and sufficient financial resources, I was able to keep that promise. The last time I saw him in person was in Feb. 2020. I had planned to visit again in March with my brother, sister-in-law, and sister, but due to the pandemic, we...

  • The Eagle Outdoors

    M.D. Johnson|May 1, 2025

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. It's spring, obviously, and there's a lot of moving parts out there. The barn swallows are back and are remodeling their 2024 nest on the east side of the shop. Sure, they're messy "decorating" the side of the garage with white, especially as the little ones get bigger, but they're extremely entertaining to watch, and anything that eats that many mosquitoes is okay in my ledger book. Across the road, the barred owls are hooting up a storm daily, their...

This was six times the amount raised in comparison to previous fundraisers and will have a huge impact supporting students on the autism spectrum and those with special needs. In attendance were ten...
