HELLO. Welcome to our weekly library news column. Let’s get started.
FICTION PICK. Our highlighted pick is “The Last Tudor” by New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregory. This is the last in the Tudor series and is based on the history of Lady Jane Grey and her nine days as the queen of England before her demise. It’s a story about Lady Jane Grey’s conflicts with her two sisters who defied her for being the queen. The author, and this book in particular, are considered “must reads” if you’re a fan of historical fiction.
KID PICK. This week we highlight Jason Chin, author of “The Universe in You: A Microscopic Journey.” Chin dives deep into our body and explores our cells, molecules, atoms, and particles which make us who we are. What’s fascinating is Chin takes some of these complex, difficult science facts and makes them accessible, understandable, and enjoyable to learn. He has another similar book titled “Your Place in the Universe,” which is wonderful, too.
PEOPLE’S VOICE. Nancy Toteff and her two sons were checking out some books. The next thing you know, Nancy, laughing, shared, “We come into the library about every three weeks, long enough for our books to be late .. The library is my favorite spot in town...Vicki [Librarian] is sweet, inviting, and welcoming...She’ll order up books for us, ones we want... She remembers our names .. Our whole family likes to read... The library meets a lot of our needs... And there’s a ton of DVDs here... There’s a lot of kid’s books... I read every day.” It was wonderful to sit and listen to Nancy sharing her experience.
VOLUNTEERS. We need two new adult volunteers for our weekly D&D game activity. Are you interested in helping out? Contact the library.
PASSES. Need a free Discoverer Pass for an upcoming vacation trip? Or a free Columbia River Maritime Museum Pass in Astoria? Reserve your free pass at the library. Limit one pass per family.
SUMMER READING. Kids are really enjoying their summer reading-activity program. The first 30 minutes are filled with fun activities and, over the next 30 minutes, kids enjoy story time, where volunteer Collette reads aloud with audio sound effects. Come to Erickson Park (581 Columbia St.) every Thursday from 1 – 2 p.m.
WEST FARMERS MARKET. Library reps were at the West Wahkiakum Farmers Market this past Friday at Rosburg Hall and signed-up 12 new members. We plan on being there again this Friday, July 18, from 1-4 p.m. Stop by the West Wahkiakum Farmers Market and we’ll get you a free card.
GRAYS RIVER GRANGE. We were recently invited by Grays River Grange to their meeting to issue library cards, and we were able to provide nine new library cards. A hearty “Thank You” goes out to Brooke, Charlie, and each member for your warm welcome.
POKEMON CLUB. Calling all Pokemoners! Want to join a new Pokemon club? Details are still forming, but we will probably meet at Pioneer Community Center in the lower room on Mondays at 1 p.m. There will be adult supervision and snacks. If interested, stop by the library.
LIBRARY CARDS. Cathlamet library cards are free for all Wahkiakum residents. Additionally, Patty Cakes, The Spar, Video Store, and Little Woo’s offer 15% off when you show your card. See library ad for details. The Cathlamet Public Library is located at 115 Columbia St. and is open Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m.
