GLOOMY START. As this week begins, we are actually seeing some cloudy and cooler conditions and I am enjoying the relief from the heat. All those who headed to the beaches for this past Labor Day weekend are probably wishing it was a tad bit nicer as the fog can be a bit damp and cool. It can be a little wetter on the coast, and not nearly as enjoyable when there is no sun and you are camping outside. At any rate, I was happy to leave those triple digits behind. Forecasters are saying the heat will return towards the end of the week, so you hea...
As the summer stretches out into another beautiful week, the miles of invasive blackberries that lace the West Coast will see another boost in fruits dangling from their thorny hosts. While some may find an obnoxious foe in the relentless host of Washington’s most popular wild fruit, others are rejoicing in another bountiful bucket of berries from a session of blackberry yoga. Stretching to reach the plumpest, most juicy berries can be a workout, but also result in a plethora of blackberry d...

This past week, a group of dedicated volunteers, including myself, came together to revitalize the woods behind the Wahkiakum County Museum, located at 65 River Street and run by the Wahkiakum County Historical Society. Though our numbers were small, our impact was significant. We removed garbage that had accumulated over time, widened the trails to make them more accessible, identified a variety of native plant species, and pruned back trees to let in more light. A key focus of our efforts was...
Wahkiakum Community Network, supported by Wahkiakum County Health & Human Services and Washington State Health Care Authority, will begin offering social and emotional learning classes for 7 to 9 year-olds every Friday beginning mid-September. Kid’s Connection was launched by the Network in response to the school district’s shift from a traditional school week to a 4-day school week. With students not in school on Fridays, many local groups and organizations have been considering how to respond to the extra day out of school. “I think the n...
On the evening of August 24, I had the pleasure of attending the 2nd annual Senior Prom at the Hope Center in Cathlamet. What started as a simple task of covering the event for The Eagle turned into a delightful evening filled with music, dancing, excellent company, reconnecting with familiar faces and making new friends! Sponsored by the Area Agency on Aging and Disabilities of Southwest Washington, the Cathlamet Women’s Club and River Mile 38, the event ran from 6 to 9 p.m. and was all a...
The Wahkiakum Mecha Mules entered the Amateur Radio School Club Roundup last February with modest goals: Score better than the previous fall, talk to more schools than before, and talk to stations in more states than before. The goal of this contest is to use Amateur Radios to talk with as many other schools in as many other states as possible. No cell phones, no land-lines, no internet. Our two high school leads, Peter Vik and Cor Hoogendoorn and our three lead middle school assistants, Steve,...
Gardens are hitting their peak right now with an abundance of fruits and vegetables making that last push of production prior to our fall weather setting in. There is so much to pick from right now, as every nook and cranny within the row is filled with luscious produce. A favorite that does not contain itself in a row is a plant that blooms and grows wildly on its own. Nasturtiums are sure to have gone wild by this point in the year, taking up residence in every space they can reach. While their growth habits are almost invasive and a little...
Greetings from the fair office. WOW! What a fair. If you weren't able to attend, you missed out. All three days had lots of entertainment. Thanks to everyone who braved the storm to watch "Arena Rock Gold" Saturday night. I have been working with this band for over 10 years and believe me they are well worth the wait. Michelle Lambert came from California and played Saturday afternoon along with lots of other talent. The Reptile Roadshow was here on Friday and Baluantic was here Friday and Satur...
NICE START. As I begin this column, the sun is shining and it looks to be a pretty decent week, with temperatures climbing back up into the mid-eighties here. It may even get hotter in other nearby towns, so it looks like our summer is back after a batch of fall-like weather that brought heavy rains, thunder and lightning. It looks like I need to get myself in gear and get all those "nice weather" chores done while I have the chance....now for the ole body to cooperate. SCHOOL STARTED. As luck would have it, the great weather returned just as s...
Superintendent Palmer has literally been rolling up his sleeves and getting things done since taking the lead of the district in July. There are three areas of focus that keep Palmer’s attention as he prioritizes what is best for kids when thinking about the “state of the school” as a new year is set to begin this week: facilities, staffing and grants. While it is still early in the year and Superintendent Palmer is just getting to know the personalities and talents in the district, he’s finding it’s been fun to meet people and learn about the...
Students at Wahkiakum School District are back and ready to shine as the new school year began Tuesday, August 27. A great deal of work has gone into classroom preparation, curriculum alignment, and schedule restructuring by the high school and middle/elementary principals. “The first day of school is always busy but there's nothing like the excitement and energy day number one brings. Students and staff started the day with big smiles and ended the day still smiling. That's a win in my b...
Traveling to Peru, exploring ancient Greece, or taking an expedition to Antarctica are new opportunities coming to the student classrooms at Wahkiakum School District this fall. Thanks to the WSU Wahkiakum Extension Service and their work to secure Career-Connected grants, students can use innovative technology from two rounds of grant monies awarded. Round one of the grants supported the robotics program and provided a 3D printer in the robotics technology classroom. The Round two award was $183,858 to grow Career-Connected learning using...

The fall sports rosters are filling up as student athletes hit the hardwood or field to condition for the season. Wahakiakum School District athletic programs offer a diverse playing field including football, volleyball, and cross country. Athletic Director Rob Garrett is looking forward to the changes and believes one grows when faced with change. “Our kids w...
At the 2024 Wahkiakum County Fair earlier this month, Judges Joe Long and Gene Strong had the enviable task of evaluating a variety of chilis. Capturing top place with it’s complex meaty flavors, variable texture, moderate heat, and subtle colors, was a chili crafted by Bryan Hokkanen. His aromatic 3-Meat Chili uses the best cuts of meats available on the market and involves a complicated process that begins the day before the chili is scheduled to be on the menu. A beautifully textured, dark and smooth, meaty chili by Robert Stowe, was this y...
By Jamie J Brown The Wahkiakum School District Board of Education held their monthly meeting Tuesday, August 20 which provided highlights from summer projects and a positive look into the new school year that begins next week. Ken Johnson, a representative from WS Communications, gave a quick public comment on the opportunity to partner with the district on providing fiber optic service and a public Wi-Fi system as they look to expand their service offerings. The expansion of the service comes at no cost to the district and will even compensate...
Marie Glusenkamp-Perez, incumbent 3rd Congressional District representative, visited the Wahkiakum County Fair last Saturday after a standing room only meet-and-greet at the Mile 38 Brewery earlier in the afternoon. She told a group of parents gathered for the 4-H Awards, "I’m grateful to everyone involved — kids, parents, teachers — for making mechanical know-how and working with their hands a priority.” Her year-end report is available on the US Congressional website at: https:/...
Since its launch in 2020, the Washington Department of Transportation and Oregon Department of Transportation have been collaborating with regional legislators on the Interstate Bridge Replacement (IBR) Program. The goal of the project is to replace the I-5 bridge connecting southwest Washington to Portland over the Columbia River. The age of the bridge alone raises safety concerns; one section is 67 years old, while the other has been in use for over a century. Additionally, the current I-5 bridge rests upon a foundation made of timber piles...
WILD WEATHER. Well, we certainly had a mix of weather the past week, and I have to say, the most impressive part was the very loud and long periods of thunder that roared through the valley along with some wild streaks of lightning! While we had some wind and rain too, we also had sunshine and muggy conditions, so it was quite a mix of weather here. It also depended on where you were, because ten miles one way or the other, could find you in completely different conditions. I hope you were in one of the drier and nicer spots. Lightning is...
