By Diana Zimmerman In the last 10 years or so, Cathlamet, and the Elochoman Slough Marina in particular, has become a favored fishing destination for sports fishermen. Hoping to further promote tourism, the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce now holds a fishing derby each spring and fall fishing season. Last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 76 people signed up to participate in this season's Hook the Hawg fishing derby, bringing in 25 local contenders and the rest coming from out of town. The event ra...
OLYMPIA – People planning their final festivities of summer before all things pumpkin spice and yellow school buses return should consult the Washington State Department of Transportation’s holiday traffic volume charts to determine best times to travel during the Labor Day weekend. With the popular travel weekend fast approaching, now is the time to make plans for expected holiday congestion on most routes – whether by ferry, vehicle, bus, rail, foot, bicycle or plane. This year’s charts include US 2, Interstate 90 and I-5 between Lacey a...
OLYMPIA — As required by state law, the political party declarations that voters must sign when participating in the 2024 Presidential Primary were certified Tuesday morning by Secretary of State Steve Hobbs. Washington’s voters do not register as members of a political party. However, state law RCW 29A.56.050 requires voters to declare on their ballot envelopes whether their party of preference is Republican or Democratic to have their votes counted in the Presidential Primary. The voted ballot inside the envelope will only count toward the...
There are four candidates competing for two positions on the Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors. Two candidates in one race were covered in last week's edition, and two more share their views this week. The pair are vying for a position being vacated by outgoing Director Paula Culbertson. What did I learn about all four candidates? They may all have different definitions for critical race theory or different ideas about how to help local students, but they all care about the kids....

OLYMPIA – After more than two years of trying, Hans Schaufus finally surrendered his weapon to the Cowlitz County Historical Museum in Kelso. His 1904 Remington rifle is historic for more than just its age. It also is believed to be the first firearm donated to a museum in Washington state in nearly a decade. Legislation sponsored by Sen. Jeff Wilson this year fixed a Catch-22 in state law that made it impossible for museums and historical societies to accept donations of firearms. Washington’s strict firearms-transfer law, approved by vot...

Each school board candidate has been given an opportunity to express in their own words what they feel voters would want to know about them. The following is information Aris Campbell provided: Background in education: I earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Portland State University. This foundation gives me an insight into human behavior, cognition, and interpersonal relationships. As a school board director, such understanding is crucial and beneficial. It enables me to take a thoughtful approach to decisions affecting the...
Over the last two and a half years, travelers along both directions of State Route 401 in Pacific County have been using a temporary single lane bypass road to travel through the area, but improvements are on the way. On Tuesday, Sept. 5, Washington State Department of Transportation’s contractor, Rognlin’s Inc., will begin work to fully restore access along this stretch of roadway, also known as the Lewis and Clark Trail Highway. They also will stabilize the adjacent slope, located about seven miles south of Naselle near milepost 5. “We under...

On Saturday, the Wahkiakum School District Parent Teacher Organization got off to a rousing start with what they hope will become an annual event, called a Back to School Touch a Truck. The event allowed youngsters to get a hands-on opportunity with a variety of large vehicles including an ambulance, more than one fire truck, a sheriff's patrol vehicle, a dump truck, and more. Sirens and horns were a huge hit with the kids, as well as a ropes course set up by a Longview Boy Scout troop. Photos...
When was the last time you stopped by the office at the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for Columbian White-tailed deer? The landscape surrounding the main office is more welcoming these days thanks to the hard work of volunteer Chris Davis and some local students involved in a Youth Conservation Corps each summer, according to Refuge Manager Jake Bonello. They have managed to create a more inviting, park like setting and Bonello hopes local residents will stop by and check it out and maybe enjoy a p...

There was a bit more excitement than usual for some people attending the Wahkiakum County Fair this weekend when a black bear was seen wandering around the campground area on Saturday evening a little after 7 p.m. “It was not afraid of people,” Wahkiakum County Undersheriff Gary Howell said. “It walked into dog kennels after dog food, right next to campers while they were playing corn hole.” Howell said that the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife was working with the sheriff’s department...

However, the Zoom link for the meeting was not set-up, causing anyone who wanted to attend that way to be unsuccessful. I drove over as soon as I realized the Zoom option...
The money saving app recently adopted by Cathlamet Market Fresh is going away. When Michael Kirby bought the grocery in Cathlamet, it became an independent store, no longer a part of Kirby Co. “The company that developed the app for Kirby Co. said we couldn’t use the same app going forward,” Kirby said. “They wanted me to pay to develop a new app. When it was split between eight stores, it was a lot more doable. It doesn’t make sense for us to continue it.” “We don’t want to go out and raise p...
Residents of Butler Street petitioned the city council for a remedy for the condition of their street. The homeowners said that the street, which is a patchwork of cement, asphalt and various repairs is desperately in need of replacement. The council agreed but debated how to proceed. Public works commented on possible repairs and the council weighed both short term and long-term fixes. In the end, the council approved the repair. The council approved the bid of a Woodland company for $333,883 to solve the water pressure issues on Fern Hill. Th...

The Funky Car Show drew a crowd to the River Mile 38 taproom on Saturday. The VWs were a hit, taking first and second place. According to RM38 co-owner Javier Sanchez, the car show started in 2017 as an anti-car show, for all types of ugly, unfinished, or project cars. "The quality of cars has greatly increased and more people are participating," he said. Photos by Diana Zimmerman....
