For those fans that made the nine hour roundtrip journey to Sunnyside this past Saturday to watch the Wahkiakum Mules take on the Liberty Bell Mountain Lions in a loser-out, winner-to-state regional game, they were rewarded with a 63-36 Mule thrashing of the Mountain Lions in a relatively short-lived game. In a game that lasted less than an hour’s time, the Mules exerted their dominance over their North Central Washington adversaries, jumping out to a 19-8 first quarter lead en route to the 63-36 victory. Comparable to how the Mules finished ou...
The Mules will be heading to central Washington this weekend as they clinched a berth to regionals with four wins this past week. Facing elimination following their second loss of the season to seventh-seeded Winlock, the third-seeded Mules found themselves in a loser-out matchup against the top-seeded Pacific League champions, the Raymond Seagulls. The Mules, however, quickly silenced any fears of a two-and-out appearance as they jumped on the Gulls early, racing to a 20-8 first quarter lead, and never looking back for a 69-33 win. Senior...
Submitted by Coach Matt Stacey Wahkiakum wrestling has a tradition; all state placers get a banner on the wrestling room wall. There are banners from earlier wrestlers such as Nabor Mendez, and a banner for our 2012 champion, Blayne Edwards. The time has come to order a pair of new banners to add to the wall. For the Mat Classic XXV state tournament last Friday and Saturday in Tacoma, the Mules were able to bring five boys guaranteed competition and two more hoping for an opportunity through the alternate system. Unfortunately doors did not...

Submitted by Mule Coach Matt Stacey In 2012 the Mule wrestling team took second at the regional tournament, edged out in the last matches by LaConner. In 2013 the Mule wrestling team again took second, this time to Raymond. Each time the Mules had their opportunities. It could come across as a cop-out from the second place coach, or even as sour grapes. But the day a coach can not learn from an older and wiser coach is the day he should hang up his shoes. Legendary Coach John Wooden has an interesting clip on you-tube concerning winning and...

The Wahkiakum Lady Mules have posted a 2-1 record in the district tournament and play the Raymond Gulls tonight (Thursday) in a loser out game, 8 p.m., in Rochester. The winner of that game qualifies for the regional tournament; the loser is eliminated. The Mules opened district tournament action with a 52-45 overtime win over the Willapa Valley Lady Vikings on February 6. They followed that with a 43-32 loss to the Morton/White Pass Timberwolves on Saturday. On Tuesday, the Mules overwhelmed...
Seniors Peter Weiler and Lars Blix combined for 39 of the Mules’ 52 points last Thursday night, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the upset minded Winlock Cardinals in the opening round of district play, with the Mules falling 57-52. The third-seeded Mules and seventh-seeded Cardinals were neck and neck throughout much of the game, with neither team able to break open a commanding lead. In the decisive fourth quarter, the Mules were clinging to a narrow four point lead when an unfortunate call turned the tide of the game. After a Winlock fou...

Last Saturday morning, the Wahkiakum Mules men’s wrestling team returned the District tournament Traveling Trophy to the announcer's stand. The team had been its steward since last February and was seeking to extend that period of possession. The Mules brought 12 men, ready for war, at 10 of the 14 weight classes. Post season wrestling allows teams to enter two scoring wrestlers at each weight class. Wrestlers are seeded according to regular season head to head competition. This creates opportunities and challenges. Mule wrestlers ended up o...
The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team finished the regular season on a strong note this past week, posting wins against Mossyrock, Toutle, and Adna to secure their position in districts as the third seed from the Central League. The Mules began the week last Wednesday against a resilient Mossyrock team that matched the Mules bucket-for-bucket for most of the game. Despite being in the midst of their best shooting performance of the entire season, the Vikings hung around to keep things interesting before succumbing to a 74-65 defeat. While...

For the second time this season the Mules came up three points short against eighth-ranked Onalaska, falling 45-42 to the Loggers. Slow starts have plagued the Mules throughout the season, and it continued again last Wednesday, as the Mules fell behind early, spotting Onalaska a 15-6 lead after one quarter of play. The Mules converted only two of nine attempts from the field in the opening frame, a pair of three-pointers from Lars Blix, whose game-high 23 points just weren’t enough to carry the Mules past the Loggers. Quarters two and three w...

The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team took a small step in the right direction this past week following back-to-back home upsets the week prior as the team buckled down to pick up a pair of league victories on the road. Last Wednesday, the Mules travelled to Napavine to face a struggling Tigers team, but it was the Mules who did a lot of the struggling early. After one quarter of play, the Mules were still stuck with a goose egg on the scoreboard, trailing 13-0 to the Tigers. Over the next three quarters, though, the Mules finally got into a...

Tori Wegdah...
Submitted by Coach Matt Stacey For the regular season grand finale, the Wahkiakum Mule wrestlers were poised to head to Kalama for the famous Rubber Chicken. However the weekend at Hoquiam had a negative side effect, and coming off a week of illness, the team was only able to field a partial lineup of nine wrestlers ready for battle. Of those nine, five were able to earn their way onto the victor's stand. This week’s lone Mule in a finals singlet was junior Jesús Crawford (132). Jesús had recently come down from 138 and was able t...
Submitted by Coach Matt Stacey The Grizzly Invitational tournament last Saturday proved to be a great proving ground with some of the strongest competition of the year. Running a strong 12 man bracket, and round robin brackets for the lady wrestlers, there were no easy weight classes in Hoquiam. With no give away weight classes, each and every victory was earned against great competition such as Cashmere, Mark Morris and Elma. Three Mules fought their way to the finals. Dallas Gott was the first Mule to place. Wrestling in a ladies 4-person...

Dallas Gott is the lone female wrestler at Wahkiakum High School. Her large expressive eyes, delicate features and petite frame are more reminiscent of a silent screen beauty than a high school athlete. Don’t let it fool you. They conceal the heart of a fierce competitor. Crystal Davis is a Wa-Ki-Hi grad, softball coach and wrestling volunteer. She broke ground here, wrestling under Andy Wolf and Keith Burns for the Mules in the 90’s. Davis started volunteering with the youth wrestling pro...

On Wednesday, the Lady Mules traveled to Adna to battle the Pirates in a nail biter. “Both teams played with a lot of intensity…it was tied at half time and we came out in the third and were able to get a quick seven point lead,” said Coach Rob Garrett. "We maintained our lead for a while, but then we had a tough time getting the ball up the court and Adna was able to take a lead.” The Mules ultimately won the game 55-53. Sam Boyce led all scorers with 15 points, followed by Tori Wegda...
Wahkiakum fans were left utterly stunned this week after the Mules were upset in back-to-back home games by Winlock and Naselle, falling 54-41 to the Cardinals on Friday and 51-47 to the Comets on Monday. The losses dropped the Mules to 6-3 in league play and 9-4 overall for the season. The Mules trailed 10-8 after one quarter of play against Winlock, but fought back to take a 26-18 lead into the break. After sinking a couple baskets to extend their lead early in the third quarter, things came apart for the Mules. They were outscored by the...
Submitted by Coach Matt Stacey Traveling two weeks in a row to compete on the east side trains the mind in many ways. First, off it trains the wrestlers to handle the overnight road trips before the regional and state tournaments. Even more, it revealed to the Mules that they can wrestle with any competition in the state. Nine of the Mule wrestlers traveled to the Almira/Coulee City/Hartline (ACH) Banks Brawl last weekend. Five ended the night in the finals. The Mules' lightweight for the day, Luke Stacey at 126 lbs., was the first in the...
