NOT NICE--As this week began, the smoke and fog combo that hit Sunday morning was really something to see, as that's just about all that you could see at my house! It was defintely not a good time to be outside and warnings were given to stay inside until our air quality improves. I hope the rain that was to arrive this week shows up and gives us some relief, as these very smokey conditions are truly terrible. Just think: some countries have this kind of poor air quality on a regular basis and often times live in masks. That certainly gives us...

We are going to be okay During World War II in the Nazi occupied Netherlands, many of the populace were starving. One man whose family was going hungry decided to try to sell one of his family’s heirlooms, his grandfather’s gold pocket watch. He rode his bicycle out of the city far into the country until he located a farm. He walked upon the porch and knocked on the door. He was greeted by an old man who could barely walk let alone work the farm. He explained how his family was going hungry and that he was willing to exchange his gra...

Shellfish managers have scheduled 39 razor clam digs on ocean beaches for dates through December. State shellfish managers have also approved the first four days of razor clam digging starting Sept. 16 after marine toxin tests showed the clams are safe to eat. Final approval of tentatively scheduled openings depends on results of marine toxin tests. Digging is also contingent upon continued guidance by public health officials monitoring COVID-19 in coastal communities. Health agencies are asking people to: · Stay home if sick, · Practice s...

The Oregon Department of Transportation has rescheduled the start of the I-5 Interstate Bridge Trunnion Replacement Project for Sept. 19 following its postponement because of wildfires. The northbound span had been set to close at 12:01 a.m. Saturday to replace major components of the lift mechanism on the 1917 span. The project will keep the northbound structure closed for nine days. On Sept. 10, ODOT postponed the work to help keep the roads as clear as possible for wildfire evacuees and emergency responders. On Sept. 11, after consultation...
People who have lost their employer-sponsored health insurance should be extremely cautious when considering offers that promise great coverage for bargain-basement premiums, Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler warned this week. They should watch out for websites posing as the state’s official health insurance marketplace or exchange, https://www.wahealthplanfinder.org/. Kreidler’s office and the Washington Health Benefit Exchange are hearing from consumers who have been duped by bogus websites when looking for health insurance. Some of the...
Washington state voters may received a postcard from the U.S. Postal Service encouraging voters to “plan ahead” for the Nov. 3 General Election. Among the recommendations is to request a mail-in or absentee ballot at least 15 days before Election Day. Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman has issued a statement pointing out that the state's registered voters don't need to request a mail in ballot. “Voters in Washington do not need to request a ballot, as ballots are automatically mailed to all registered voters at least 18 days prior to Elect...
TOASTY--We got a heavy dose of Summer weather just as we go into the school year and what we always think of as Fall sports, but as we can see, these high temperatures mean more swim suits, flip flops and beach time, and not coats, umbrellas and boots! Of course, things can change here on a dime, so who knows how long this heat wave will continue, but I'm hoping you're enjoying it while it's here. For me, I will continue to hide in the basement where it's cool! Wildfires are raging in several states and some are experiencing black outs and of...
Fishing in Southwestern Washington This past month I have witnessed a prolific amount of people along the Columbia River fishing. This is not an unusual event as it is not only the commercial fishermen trying to make a decent wage, but also the average Joe with his family or friends enjoying a weekend on the water. In all the years I have lived here I have never witnessed the amount of boats on the water near the Astoria-Megler Bridge and numerous people fishing from the banks of the river. I personally think it is because the lifted...

NICE--We had a nice weekend but while we had the sunny days, those evenings got pretty chilly so we know the seasons will soon be changing. While we had just a bit of a downturn on Monday morning, which brought a smattering of showers, it didn't last long and was decent the rest of the day. It also looks to be warming up for the rest of the week with some pretty high temperatures, so it looks like Summer isn't over just yet. I do hope you'll enjoy it while it's here as we all know what can happen here in the blink of an eye: Winter! Fingers...
What is happening with the SR4 Slide? Celeste Dimichina, the communications consultant for The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), has informed me of an update on the State Route 4 Emergency Stabilization Project. As of Aug. 20, this project was awarded to Granite Construction Company. Typically, once a project has been awarded, it can take up to 45 days before construction can begin. This would mean construction on this project will begin sometime between late September and...
To help communities along Washington’s coastal residents visualize and prepare for the next tsunami, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has released a new series of tsunami simulations. Using detailed tsunami models, geologists at DNR produced simulations that show the estimated height and speed of waves that would strike the southwest Washington coast following a magnitude 9.0 earthquake on the Cascadia subduction zone. These simulations are designed to give emergency planners and communities the best possible v...
“It was a learning curve for all of us,” Wahkiakum County Fair Board President Joe Blalock said of this year’s Virtual Wahkiakum County Fair. Blalock, who is not only on the Fair Board, but is involved in 4-H, said that between seeing what the youth had created and working with Steve Carson at the Skamokawa Internet Services, they were able to put together a website that was better than initially expected. “We were just hoping we could get something together, so it actually came out better...
The hounds will be running again at Misty River Plantation, 117 Cross Dike Road on Puget Island, the weekend of September 26-27. Spring and early summer events were canceled due to the covid virus lockdown, but the sponsoring group has received authorization from the AKC to resume lure coursing trials in late September. The event will feature both long course running, chasing the bunny lure around a random track, and straight timed dashes in which you can obtain an actual miles per hour score for your dog. The run is open to all dogs,...
