    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 2, 2017

MIX OF WEATHER--We have had some gorgeous fall days, and we've had some "so-so" ones like this past Sunday, which was cloudy and gloomy and dampish, but it wasn't pouring down rain at least. Monday was awesome but then our temperatures are going to get colder and wetter I hear, so it's just that time of year I guess, so the warm days are probably a thing of the past from now on. SET CLOCKS BACK--Don't forget, this is the weekend to set your clocks back one hour, so before you go to bed Saturday night, be sure to do that, or you'll wind up...

  • Change in stream beds impacts salmon spawn

    Columbia Basin Bulletin|Nov 2, 2017

By the Columbia Basin Bulletin A Washington State University researcher has found that the mating habits of salmon can alter the profile of stream beds, affecting the evolution of an entire watershed. His study is one of the first to quantitatively show that salmon can influence the shape of the land. Alex Fremier, lead author of the study and associate professor in the WSU School of the Environment, said female salmon "fluff" soil and gravel on a river bottom as they prepare their nests, or redds. The stream gravel is then more easily removed...

    Nov 2, 2017

A razor clam dig in early November will go ahead as planned at Long Beach and Twin Harbors, but the status of two other ocean beaches tentatively scheduled to open depends on results from additional toxin testing. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has approved the Nov. 3-5 dig on evening tides at Long Beach and Twin Harbors after marine toxin tests showed that clams on those beaches are safe to eat. • Influx of tropical organisms found in Alaska waters

    Columbia Basin Bulletin|Nov 2, 2017

Researchers at NOAA’s Alaska Fisheries Science Center are reporting a never-before-seen phenomenon in Alaska waters—an influx of strange organisms that resemble flattened, translucent sea pickles. It may sound like déjà vu. A similar story made headlines along the West Coast last summer, but this is a new situation for Alaska. Scientists call these jelly-like organisms pyrosomes. The creatures typically live in tropical waters around the world, occasionally emerging a little farther north in sub-tropical waters. But no one has ever recorded pyr...

  • Lots of Halloween events taking place on weekend

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 26, 2017

WILD ONE!--We sure had ourselves a nasty, wet and windy begining to the weekend, as Saturday was just horrible and by the evening, even worse. Many people lost power, which in our case, was caused by a big tree that came down and took out the overhead lines. Then more rain fell later on, after we had already recorded our 6-plus inches that day, so by morning, there was water over West Valley Road once again. For those of us who have lived here awhile, it's pretty normal but for others, it was a bit of a surprise! There was high water in all...

  • Finding fire and water; season events start

    Trudy Fredrickson|Oct 26, 2017

I hope everyone fared well with the wicked weather we were hit with last weekend. I came home from a wonderful weekend in Oregon with family to water over my driveway and ducks swimming in Lake Fred (normally pasture). And mud. My friend, PJ Katims and I left on Friday and drove through the Eagle Creek fire area to go to Redmond and Bend, Ore. The devastation along the highway is phenomenal. In places the metal guard rails beside the road were melted, with some of the burned trees still standing, but black and looking like skeletons. Thank God...
