The hounds scheduled to run at Misty Rivers Plantation on Puget Island this weekend have already chased the bunny and gone home. Due to a last-minute schedule change, the meet was held this past weekend. After some hasty preparation, a relatively small group of mostly basenjis and whippets ran the lure course on Saturday and Sunday, so there will be no meet this coming weekend as previously announced. The next lure coursing events are scheduled for late September and the beginning of October. Firm dates and running schedules will be announced...

Since May 1, four bats found in Washington have tested positive for rabies, the highest number identified in the state in the month of May since 1998. The Washington State Department of Health reminds people to call their local health department if they, a family member or a pet interacts with a bat. Health officials routinely test for and find rabid bats, typically during the summer months. DOH wants the public to continue to take appropriate precautions if a bat – dead or alive – is found. Try to avoid contact with bats and other wild ani...

Paul added, “We’ve been extremely lucky to have the talents of John for so many years. We wish him well in his well-deserved retirement and look forward to the next phase of The KLOG Morning...
WEEKEND WAS NICE--The traffic was a bit heavy on Friday, but it sure was a nice day to start out this past Memorial Day weekend. Saturday saw some more clouds move in, but no rain, so it was perfect for doing some yard work, and Sunday was gorgeous. By Monday, which was Memorial Day, we had some more clouds but still a wonderful day. Considering parts of Maryland got hammered with massive rains and flash flooding and tropical storm Alberto was causing some havoc down south, I'd say we've been quite fortunate. I can only hope our upcoming...

Another really busy week. Last Friday we celebrated my oldest son’s 50th birthday with lots of surprises for him. His two younger brothers met him on the golf course and he was totally dumbfounded. They hadn’t been together in two years. Another friend also arrived from Oregon to make it a foursome. In the meantime, his wife was decorating a warehouse with black and gold decor, a catered dinner and many more family and friends awaited his arrival. Such a fun day, plus I had five of my children to visit with all weekend. On Saturday, the whole f...

On May 8, 2018, two years after he died, Wahkiakum County resident John Didricksen was buried at Arlington Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. It was a final dream, fulfilled posthumously by friends and family. Didricksen graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1966. According to his friend David Nelson, Didricksen had a learning disorder and never learned to read. Still, the Army didn’t hesitate to draft him. When his younger brother, Joseph, was called up, Didricksen, who had already served t...

Recently released data show that Washington state is doing well compared to other states when it comes to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) use. Data recently released by AIDSVu represents an encouraging and useful perspective on PrEP use. The AIDSVu data show that in Washington state, at least 2,694 individuals are on PrEP, with the understanding that these data are an underestimate. “PrEP is an effective tool for HIV prevention, and is a critical component of our state’s Ends AIDS Washington initiative,” said Office of Infectious Disease Deput...

NICE START--This week began with some nice weather and I think the sunny and breezy conditions are just great, as it's not too hot out there while we catch up on those yard chores. While my rhodies are all popping out, the grass popped up as well, so it was definitely time to crank up the lawn mower and get that weedeater going, as nothing grows faster with some earlier sprinkles and then some sunshine than the lawn and weeds! Here's hoping the holiday weekend brings us some sunshine as well. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May...
Well, I made it to California last Thursday in 11 hours, visited a few minutes with family, and slept a few hours. Got up on Friday and drove to Corning to spend the night in a motel 30 minutes from Chico where my granddaughter’s graduation took place at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. Hot and blinding sun in the stadium. It is always so satisfying to see your grandchild completing a task that they chose for themselves. Madeline Nicole Fredrickson will be teaching Math at a middle school in Chico next year. This week will be a full one. My s...
Greetings from the Community Center. Our Flex-Hosts, volunteers and I are looking for community input for the future of your Community Center. I have created a short and easy poll with possible ideas based on the comments from the CC suggestion box and from talking to community members. The Wahkiakum Community Center Coordinator position is a P/T position w/ funding only available to provide roughly 15 hours per week, each month. The CC had Cheryl Nelson try out the floor for tap dancing and it is good to go. Are there any tap dancers out...
