The largest Quilt Show in Cowlitz County will be held when Ladies of the Lake Quilt Guild of Longview, presents its annual event on April 28 and 29. “Quilting for the Art of It” will be held at the Youth and Family Link facility in Longview. One hundred fifty quilts will be displayed in 21 different categories, including Youth, Traditional Pieced, Mixed Media, Applique, Art, Wearable, and more. WHAT A DAY!--As this week began, on Palm Sunday, we definitely had a mix of weather. Not only did we have snow, rain showers and sunshine but we threw in a nice little hail storm to boot! The Naselle Community Center and FAFF will present a painting party with teacher and artist Abbie (Smith) Mumley. At the International Public Debate Association (IPDA) Championship Tournament, the Lower Columbia College Fighting Smelt debate team finished third in community college team sweepstakes. The tournament, which took place March 23-25 at Boise State University, featured 45 of the top collegiate public debate programs in the nation. While going through old files in my computer, I found a folder named “Maki files.” I opened it and found a treasure. One short piece shows an old photo of a wide open valley in the upper Grays. Spring is here, and with it – the deadline to remove studded tires before end of day Friday, March 31. The Washington State Department of Transportation encourages all drivers to plan now to avoid a potential fine of $137, which could be issued by the Washington State Patrol starting as soon as Saturday, April 1. Studded tires are legal in Washington from Nov. 1 to March 31. There is no individual exception or “out of state waiver” to the studded tire dates. Pacific Lutheran University has announced that Malia Ana Silva, a student at Wahkiakum High School, has been named a President’s Scholar, earning a scholarship of $34,000 per year. It’s time to build up your summer reading library at the spring 2023 BBML Foundation book sale. The books have been piling up since the October sale with books donated by fellow booklovers. The proceeds of the sale are given to the library to purchase reading materials and provide library cards to lower income families and, with parental approval, library cards for children.
