    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 9, 2017

CHILLY OUT--Last week ended quite wet and a bit chilly, and for some areas to the north of us, as well as in the mountains, the "white stuff" was falling! Classmate, Greg Lloyd, said it was snowing pretty good up there in Everett and others said it was getting quite white out, to which I responded with a "Keep it up there please" request! I hope you used that extra hour of sleep on Sunday morning to snuggle down under the covers and stay warm! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Nov. 9-15 are Jordyn Kattari, Jonnie Knowles, Pat...

  • Thomas Middle School hosts chess tournament

    Darrell Alexander|Nov 9, 2017

On Saturday, November 4th, the chess tournament held at the John Thomas Middle School was titled the First Cathlamet Open. I was recently informed by Rick Nelson, the publisher of The Wahkiakum County Eagle, that he had played in a tournament in Cathlamet back in the late 1960's. So Saturday's was not the first tournament, yet it did not make a difference to the entrants. Chess is the game of kings and the king of games. The game of chess goes back nearly fifteen centuries originating in...

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 2, 2017

MIX OF WEATHER--We have had some gorgeous fall days, and we've had some "so-so" ones like this past Sunday, which was cloudy and gloomy and dampish, but it wasn't pouring down rain at least. Monday was awesome but then our temperatures are going to get colder and wetter I hear, so it's just that time of year I guess, so the warm days are probably a thing of the past from now on. SET CLOCKS BACK--Don't forget, this is the weekend to set your clocks back one hour, so before you go to bed Saturday night, be sure to do that, or you'll wind up...

  • Change in stream beds impacts salmon spawn

    Columbia Basin Bulletin|Nov 2, 2017

By the Columbia Basin Bulletin A Washington State University researcher has found that the mating habits of salmon can alter the profile of stream beds, affecting the evolution of an entire watershed. His study is one of the first to quantitatively show that salmon can influence the shape of the land. Alex Fremier, lead author of the study and associate professor in the WSU School of the Environment, said female salmon "fluff" soil and gravel on a river bottom as they prepare their nests, or redds. The stream gravel is then more easily removed...

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has approved the Nov. 3-5 dig on evening tides at Long Beach and Twin Harbors after marine toxin tests showed that clams on those beaches are safe to eat. No digging will be allowed before noon. Tentative dig dates for Mocrocks and Copalis can be found on WDFW's website at...
