After the recent fires in the Columbia River Gorge, so many people in Oregon and Washington wanted to help. While the Eagle Creek fire was a devastating blow, it reaffirms the importance of the capital campaign that the Friends of the Columbia Gorge are running: Preserve the Wonder. The goal is to conserve 420 acres of land on the Washington side of the Gorge. These lands preserve beautiful views, protect wildlife, and provide more places for people to take solace in nature. The evening includes a virtual tour of the seven Preserve the Wonder...

Recreation and outdoor enthusiasts have two more opportunities to visit Washington’s state parks for free in 2017. On these free days, day-use visitors will not need a Discover Pass for vehicle access on Saturday, Nov. 11 and Friday, Nov. 24. Since the free days were first designated in 2011, the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission has set aside Nov. 11, Veterans Day, as one of its free days to honor those who served in the armed forces. This year, the agency moved one of its two spring free days to Nov. 24, as a way to e...

Researchers at NOAA’s Alaska Fisheries Science Center are reporting a never-before-seen phenomenon in Alaska waters—an influx of strange organisms that resemble flattened, translucent sea pickles. It may sound like déjà vu. A similar story made headlines along the West Coast last summer, but this is a new situation for Alaska. Scientists call these jelly-like organisms pyrosomes. The creatures typically live in tropical waters around the world, occasionally emerging a little farther north in sub-tropical waters. But no one has ever recorded pyr...

WILD ONE!--We sure had ourselves a nasty, wet and windy begining to the weekend, as Saturday was just horrible and by the evening, even worse. Many people lost power, which in our case, was caused by a big tree that came down and took out the overhead lines. Then more rain fell later on, after we had already recorded our 6-plus inches that day, so by morning, there was water over West Valley Road once again. For those of us who have lived here awhile, it's pretty normal but for others, it was a bit of a surprise! There was high water in all...

I hope everyone fared well with the wicked weather we were hit with last weekend. I came home from a wonderful weekend in Oregon with family to water over my driveway and ducks swimming in Lake Fred (normally pasture). And mud. My friend, PJ Katims and I left on Friday and drove through the Eagle Creek fire area to go to Redmond and Bend, Ore. The devastation along the highway is phenomenal. In places the metal guard rails beside the road were melted, with some of the burned trees still standing, but black and looking like skeletons. Thank God...

A Washington State University researcher has found that the mating habits of salmon can alter the profile of stream beds, affecting the evolution of an entire watershed. His study is one of the first to quantitatively show that salmon can influence the shape of the land. Alex Fremier, lead author of the study and associate professor in the WSU School of the Environment, said female salmon "fluff" soil and gravel on a river bottom as they prepare their nests, or redds. The stream gravel is then more easily removed by flooding, which opens the...

NIPPY--Last weekend was sunny and nice during the daytime but those late night temperatures were below freezing out here in West Valley, so we were definitely feeling the "nip" in the air. Unfortunately, the sunshine will be replaced with more rain and maybe even some strong winds by the time you read this, so let's hope it doesn't last too long and we catch another break in systems, as most of us are really not ready for weeks of cold and rain! The change in weather does remind us however, that we need to be ready for "anything" and so it's...
