  • Low steelhead numbers restrict gillnetters

    Columbia Basin Bulletin|Aug 31, 2017

Early commercial fall fishing began August 21 for both commercial non-treaty gillnetters and treaty gillnetters on the Columbia River mainstem while Idaho, due to historic low returns, suspended retention of steelhead in Idaho rivers as of August 17. For commercial gillnetters, the limited opening is for five nine-hour fishing periods, all upstream of Warrior Rock at St. Helens, Oregon. Because of the poor steelhead returns, this early fall commercial gillnetting fishery is the only fishery this fall that lower Columbia River gillnetters can...

However, there are a few folks who aren't thrilled with all this drynes, as those running low on water or who are already out around here, are probably hoping for some rain! With fire danger extremely high, I'm guessing fire fighters are wishing for some as well. As always, be...

  • Wahkiakum County Fair opens today at 9 a.m.

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 17, 2017

COOLED DOWN--Lately, I have thoroughly enjoyed the cloudier, cooler mornings before the sun came out in the afternoon as that meant things did not get so hot here as they have been inland, and that's fine by me. The heavy marine layer even gave us some damp roads a couple of days from the dew dripping off the trees and beings it's been so dry, even that amount of moisture was welcomed. However, by Saturday evening we were listening to real rain in West Valley and I was totally happy about that. As a matter of fact, I think I even heard my yard...

  • Successful blood drive gathers 41 units of blood

    Trudy Fredrickson|Aug 17, 2017

It has been an interesting week for me. I had a message on Facebook out of the blue from a cousin and his wife asking if I planned to be home the following day. We had probably not seen each other for 25 years, and they were on their way from California to Centralia to visit one of their sons. It was wonderful catching up for a few hours before they were off again with the promise of making this their summer destination now that they are retired. I had no idea they had family so close. Then my son, Carl and his girlfriend decided to come down f...

Technology such as oxygen level indicators on their air masks, TIC (thermal imaging camera) that helps them "see through the smoke" to find heat, and automatic pressure regulating on the truck's water system all help keep our volunteers safe and efficient...
