  • What's Happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Dec 8, 2011

It was a fun 4-H Jamboree Event that Deb Gribskov and Shawn Deal organized last Saturday at the Wahkiakum High School. The Jamboree was attended by 4-H’ers of all ages and they made decorated cookies, delicious fudge, berry jams and created a multitude of crafts items. The kids completed all the projects by themselves with a little guidance and a tiny bit of help from the 4-H leaders and parent volunteers that attended. Even the littlest kids mashed berries, added pectin and sugar to make berry jam. These little ones worked with their p...

  • What's happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Dec 1, 2011

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner! I was very thankful that the high tides, big gusts of wind and inches of rain predicted did not cause flooding at the Fairgrounds. Earlier in the week I had asked some local volunteers, Bill Chamberlain, Ed Stevens and Jerry Ledtke, to watch for any approaching flood water problems as this storm moved through our County. We have one tractor we use throughout the winter that they would move to higher ground if flood waters started threatening to go over the dike surrounding the Fairgrounds. Why...

  • Thanksgiving over, Christmas coming

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 1, 2011

It didn’t look good for our trip to Oregon last week when we got up on Wednesday morning. Lake Fred (our hay field) had raised its ugly head and the driveway was flooded. Thank goodness for our van, which we ended up driving as the Volvo couldn’t make it through the water. My wonderful sister, Diane, even had to miss a day of work as she couldn’t get her car out. Now it looks like a little rain on the way and then some dry days. News from Naselle: The Naselle sports teams will be pretty busy with games in this week’s schedule: today (Thursd...

  • Holiday events at Redmen Hall

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 24, 2011

NICE ENDING--As last weekend came to an end, we woke to a very frosty world with temperatures in the lower 20s--brr! In spite of the cold, it was very sunny and dry, so that part of it was good. Forecasters are saying we're in for a couple of blustery days prior to your getting this, so I hope they were wrong and we came through with nothing more than a bit of normal wind and rain. Only time will tell I guess. Sometimes these warnings come and go with little fuss or muss, while other times, we get hit full on, so it's always better to have...

The Wahkiakum County Fair Board would like to say thank you to the many bingo players that attended Turkey Bingo last Friday night. Every game of bingo played was suspenseful and exciting. The winning card holder would receive a turkey or a ham for their bingo. Sometimes there would be two bingos at the same time. Mike Backman, our number caller, would have to do a bingo run off to determine the winner. Now that’s intense bingo! I suspect there will be some delicious Thanksgiving dinners in Wahkiakum County cooked this week by many of our lucky...

Well, the temperatures have shown us that winter is just about here, along with the high winds last week and snow over the weekend. Our walnut tree still had all of its leaves on Saturday, but after the freeze Saturday night and the wind, it was completely bare of leaves by Sunday afternoon. It almost looked like it was raining leaves. I’m sure everyone is getting ready for a big holiday weekend with family and friends, so let’s remember to be safe in our travels. News from Naselle: No school for the Naselle-Grays River Valley School Dis...

NOT TOO NICE--Last weekend was definitely a cold, wet and blustery one, which brought down a lot of the leaves that had been making the hillsides so pretty. It was a complete turn around from the gorgeous day we had last Thursday. It is the middle of November already, so this windy, bone chilling, soggy nastiness should be expected as part of our normal Fall weather I guess, but it doesn't mean I have to like it! And to top it off is the snow they say may come down to the 1,000 foot level, which almost always includes us. Just as a reminder,...

  • Bazaar season is in full swing

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 10, 2011

MAYBE THIS WEEK?--Last week the forecasters predicted rain every day. Thankfully, they were wrong, and after a few very cold and foggy days, we actually had some sunny, decent days. This week, I've seen rain forecast for every day, or a big storm coming, but so far, it hasn't been all that bad. Of course, things change quickly around here, so w'll take the sun while we have it. With the unexpected drop in temperatures last week, a few folks found themselves unthawing pipes and pumps, which is never a good sign this early. As most of us were...

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Nov 10, 2011

Winter is definitely on the way. We had beautiful, frosty white fields a couple of days in a row, though the sun warmed things up nicely in the afternoons. Now it seems that a little rain and spots of sunshine are in the offing for a while. News from Naselle: The KM trophy is in the hands of our own Naselle Comets after last Friday’s win over the Wahkiakum Mules. It was a good game. Congratulations to the Comet team. NOT BAD--As this work week started we had a mostly nice day, as only a few showers came down here and there. Better yet, by nightfall, it seemed very dry and it was a perfect night for all those trick or treaters and we trust you only got treats and no tricks on Halloween night! As the week progresses, they say we may be in for a week or more of rain every day--ugh! Even snow levels are dropping. Let's hope what we get is just light rain as I'm not ready to face any flooding situations just yet! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from No...

  • What's Happening at the Fair?

Becky Ledtke, Wah. County Fair Manager|Nov 3, 2011

I received some amazing information last week from Kayrene Gilbertsen. The Wahkiakum County Fair owns a double-ended Columbia River gillnet boat! The boat was built between 1913 and 1916. It has been stored for over 30 years in the Vista Park Port Shop in Skamokawa. Since we now have a gillnet boat, I spent some time reading up on these sturdy fishing boats. The double-ended gillnet boats were designed for fishing in rough water. We all know how quickly the Columbia River can become a white cap terror if you are in a small boat and the tide...

HALF AND HALF--It was a so-so weekend with a soggy Saturday but a suitable Sunday; not exactly a sunny day but at least it wasn't raining, which made some outside work possible. Of course, with this being the last of October, I guess the rain shouldn't be so unexpected. As this work week began the sun was shining but temperatures were dropping, so with temperatures hovering in the 30s, we're definitely feeling that Fall nip in the air! Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Oct 20, 2011

NICE--It's been a pretty decent weekend as we had a drying trend show up that helped brighten everyone's spirits, I bet. I think it also brought out everybody's lawn mowers one more time and hopefully the last. While the day time temperatures were nice, it was in the mid-30s here Saturday night, definitely on the nippy side. While we may be lulled into thinking we've got time to prepare for the winter ahead, I'm thinking we better get with the program as we are into the third week of October, and heading into the fourth. Where is the time going...
