It’s been a cold and wet October at the Fairgrounds. This type of weather doesn’t bother Search and Rescue (SAR) members or their special dogs. The SAR met at the Fairgrounds last Sunday and held their dog training exercises. I was asked to be a track layer. This was something I didn’t know anything about, so was given instructions by Diane Morrow, the trainer for the six dogs in the SAR program. We enjoyed a wonderful unplanned trip to Redmond, Ore. this past weekend and celebrated our daughter’s 45th birthday with her and her family. She and her husband and our son and daughter in law are in the process of brewing beer and hopefully opening their own brewery soon, to be called “Smith Rock Brewery.” I had the pleasure of helping brew a new batch on Saturday. Concert to feature classical piano music A concert entitled Drawn to the Light, featuring the piano music of Edvard Grieg, hymns new and old, and the grand Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor by J.S. Bach, will be presented at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church at 3 p.m. on October 30. A free will offering will benefit the Wahkiakum High School music program as well as the church's music program. It sure is nice to have so much sunshine lately. I might even get the lawn mowed one more time before the rains make it impossible. The chill in the morning and evening air are sure signs of fall making an appearance, but the leaves haven’t really had much of a change in their colors yet. Stew luncheon & bazaar set for October 29 Beef stew, cheese bread, coffee, hot mulled cider and dessert will be bringing people from miles around to the Grays River Methodist Church social hall on October 29. WET WET--It looks like we've got a wet week ahead of us with mist, drizzle, light showers, showers or rain in the forecast, which in layman's terms just means wet! We did have part of our weekend fairly dry, so it wasn't too bad. VFW sponsors youth essay contest The Cathlamet VFW, in cooperation with Cathlamet schools is promoting the VFW's National Essay Contests. For all high school students, the subject is "Is there pride in serving in our military?" The 2008 national winner was from Washington State, winning approximately $35,000 in scholarships. For elementary students, 3-5th grade have "What is an American?" as a theme while 6-8th grade have "Are you proud of your country?" We are starting our Fairgrounds winterization projects! A huge thanks to Ed Stevens, Mark Crary, Barbara Clark and Georgie Billings for moving our big freezers, refrigerators, ice machine, ice cream freezer and stoves out of the food booth and onto the entertainment stage. Our new stage built by Contractor Mark Crary can hold the weight of these appliances because Mark used 2” by 10” floor joists to support the floor. We will hope for a dry winter but we are getting prepared for a wet one. The stage will be the new high and dry home for our...
In order to complete this column I have had to move my computer to another room, since our new little kittens have decided to wreak havoc on my typing and me. They think I’m a tree to be climbed and chewed on, and they think it’s so much fun to touch the keys and make things move on the screen. NOT NICE--As this week began, the skies opened up and poured rain upon us! It was something else on Sunday afternoon as we haven't seen it rain that hard in awhile now. If you grew up in Wahkiakum County you already know there are lots of elk and deer that live in the mountains and valleys that surround Skamokawa. Hunters, if you need a place to camp, our park is 20 minutes away from South Fork Ridge, where you will probably be hunting. We have camp sites available at the Fairgrounds Park with rest room facilities and a shower. Your camping fees will be used to operate and fund the 2012 Wahkiakum County Fair. I am now the proud owner of (or maybe owned by) two new kittens. They both come from feral heritage, and were raised and nurtured by a dear friend. Alwen and Isabel are gray and white, long haired with stubby tails and are the most loving kittens I’ve ever seen. As I sit here typing, Alwen is asleep on my right shoulder and Isabel is in my lap curled in a ball. They have only been here in their new home for about two hours, and already have settled in. RAIN--We ended last week with some rain and began the week with showers, plain ole rain and some good, gusty winds, which brought down a lot of leaves along the roadways; definitely seemed more like Fall! I'd just about forgotten how miserable it can be tromping around in a parking lot in the rain! The good news out of the rainy stretch was that it sure helped calm down those fire fears, as things were tinder dry out there. Dog fun run this Sunday The Columbia River Canine Club will be holding fun and practice runs on October 2 at 117 Cross Dike Road on Puget Island. All dogs, large and small are welcome. A fund raising event to benefit our local 4-H Clubs is happening this weekend! It’s called Columbia River Country Days and is presented by Friends of Extension and Wahkiakum County 4-H. HOT ONE--Several days last week were quite toasty, as was half the weekend, so while school started, hunting season began and we are thinking Fall, it felt like Summer had finally shown up and about cooked us all! As Fair Manager I have the honor of giving out a Manager's Award. This year I gave the award to two volunteer superintendents who spent many weeks building, cleaning, painting, decorating and preparing paperwork before our Fair started. These two volunteers worked many long days and through it all smiled and enjoyed every minute!
