The Fairgrounds was full of activity last week-end. Dan Wakefield brought his Boy Scout Troop from Puyallup to camp at the Fairgrounds Park. The group of seven scouts and three adults volunteered to give us some help with the projects we are doing as we get ready for our Fair. The scouts painted, denailed boards, used the weed eater, moved lumber and helped to build some animal pens in the new barn. The scout troop likes using recycled materials, they were very happy with the materials we had to build the pens with. Some of the pens we set up...
What an absolutely wonderful week we had with our kids, grandkids and dogs last week. They must have brought the sun from California and taken it back with them when they left. At least it’s not cold. For the first time our grandkids didn’t want to go home. They all learned how to drive a stick shift car while they were here, learned how to shoot a .22, how to build a brick fire pit, went swimming in the river, picked salmon berries and they all got along with each other. That was quite an accomplishment in my book of raising kids. News fro...

THE END--Here we are at the end of yet another month and this day marks the half way point in the year. Holy smokes, where did the first half of 2011 go? I have yet to start on all those New Year resolutions I made! Before you know it, I'll be making them again, as it seems time is marching at a lightning pace and I'm getting further and further behind. I wonder what that means? ANOTHER ENDING--This weekend marked the end of the fourth annual Smoky Water Follies put on by the Skamokawa Grange. If you missed the show, you missed some great talen...

The sun was shining last Saturday and Sunday, so I put the rummage and book sale signs out on the highway. We had people stopping by both days and purchasing some of our many used books and rummage sale treasures. We will be planning a sale each week end in the month of July. At these sales, I will be selling raffle tickets for the two cords of firewood from the alder trees that were cut up and stacked last month. I am raffling the cords separately; you can purchase tickets for cord one and cord two. The tickets can also be purchased at the...
I guess one day of summer weather every once in a while is all we are going to get from Mother Nature this year. It sure doesn't make it easy to build a house or plant a garden. News from Naselle: School is out for the summer but I would like to commend the high school and middle school students who made the honor roll for the 4th quarter. They are: Seniors--Alex Bighill, Chase Chapman, Cody Cooley and Taylor Wasmundt; Juniors--Robert Eaton, Trevin Leeland*, Lidia Sanchez, Austin Smith, Cramer Smith*, Rachel Underwood, Christopher Walkowiak*,...
DO NOT USE--To all Eagle readers, please do not send anything to my email address that had been in this newspaper as gremlins got into that account recently and told everybody I was in Madrid, Spain and needed some money. Well, obviously, that is not true! My apologies for the bogus e-mails you got and the best way to eliminate those is to take that e-mail address out of your address book and block all notices from it. If you have news, please just call me directly. DRIPPY START--As this week began, it was sort of drippy, cloudy and cool on...
The Fairgrounds arena is ready to use and looks great! Fairgrounds handyman Ed Stevens received some help with this project from volunteers Georgie Billings, Barbara Czarnecki and Sven Antijunti last week. The project called for 50 plus holes to be dug in the rocky ground and we sure appreciated their help. The turnout paddock areas on the right side of the arena are in place and stabilized. Time to start a new project! The rusting metal in the horse barn stalls was in need of some serious help. Horse barn superintendent Valerie Antijunti is...

WET AND MUGGY--As this week began, we were back to raindrops off and on but some sun breaks made things steamy at times and it was pretty muggy on Monday really. Of course, anybody who has been fighting to get their lawn mowed between showers, knows that this is just the kind of weather that makes the ole grass grow before your eyes. They say we're going to get some summer like weather, and with summer officially starting next Tuesday, I'm sure we're all hoping that's true! It's almost impossible to get much done with only a day and a half of...
The final legislative budget included $1,750,000 per year for 2012 and 2013 for the Fair fund. That is a decrease of $250,000 per year, but considering the cuts made to other programs and the original budget proposals, it is very good news. Better news. The capital budget included $1,000,000 for health and safety grants for county fairs. That is more than double what has been received in the past. This money can be used for plumbing, electrical, ADA, lighting, fencing, etc… projects that need to be done on our fairgrounds. I would...
I understand that several people have been having some issues with their telephones and their service through Wahkiakum West. I also had some problems. When I spoke with Carol Larson at the Wahkiakum West office, she asked that I put the word out for everyone who is having a problem, please document the time, date, phone number of origin and/or destination, your phone number and exactly what was going on, then e-mail it to her at clarson@wahkiakumwest.net. By doing this she can forward the gathered info to the outside carrier and maybe get to...
FANTASTIC--While we were all stressing out about the rain and the wind that had been going on most of last week, come Saturday, the Dollars for Scholars Rods and Reels Rod Run met with clear skies, sunshine and just fantastic weather all day long and of course, brought with it a wonderful turn out of cars once again. For the past six years we have had to stress out about the weather, as everyone knows that miserable weather means disaster when it comes to car shows, but the lucky streak has continued! The only thing you could say negative...
Rainy weather and grass growing what seemed like inches each day was the challenge put before the fairgrounds volunteers last week. We had spent many weeks painting and cleaning inside the buildings, creating new flower beds and cutting up cords of fire wood in the rain. There were acres of grass to mow one more time before the Dollars for Scholars event. We needed the ground to dry so we could finish this task and turn the fairgrounds into a beautiful place for the event. Finally the sun was back in our skies and it was very hot on Friday. We...
Well, it looks like we had at least a couple of summer days. It seemed like a perfect day for the Dollars For Scholars Sturgeon Derby and Barbecue, as well as the car show. Once again a huge success. News from Naselle: Naselle-Grays River Valley Class of 2011 will hold their graduation ceremony on June 11 at 4 p.m. in the gymnasium. I would like to congratulate each and every on of these students on this accomplishment and wish them well in the new chapter of their lives. DECENT--As this three day Memorial weekend comes to an end, the sun is shining and it's turning out pretty nice; it's just too bad it wasn't like this the entire weekend. I hear tell that we're going to warm up and be very sunny and nice for the weekend and it couldn't come at a better time because the car show is coming! THIS IS IT--This weekend is a big one in Skamokawa and all the sturgeon fishermen are hoping for some good catches and all the car show folks are hoping the sun shows up, as the annual Dollars for Scholars Rods and Reels Rod...

DAMP BEGINNING--As this work week begins, it's a bit on the damp side, but considering we had several nice, dry days last week, I guess we can't complain. With the calendar still saying Spring, showers are to be expected and they dampen those gardens, so that's a good thing. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May 26 to June 1 are Keil C. Parker, Tim Rushing, Katherine York, Don Anderson, Mike Johnson, Nancy Corbin, Penny Bonds, Wesley McClain, Serene Snow-Carroll, Jeanne Paulsen, Benjamin McClain, Amy Knowles, Stephanie Prestegard,...
WET START--As this week began, it was a very wet and nasty Sunday, so everyone who had been out working like crazy on Friday and Saturday, got to take a rest on Sunday, as it was not fit for man nor beast out there. Some of us even took this great opportunity to head to the Fair Foundation's chicken and dumpling dinner prepared by Janet Bryan. We not only got a rest from working in the yard but from cooking as well! Monday wound up being super nice after a cloudy beginning, and the folks trying to take advantage of the nice weather were working...
NICE--Once again we had half of a nice weekend, as Saturday saw some sun but there were also rain showers here and there. However, sunshine prevailed all day Sunday. I’m sure it was lawn mowing time for most, as the threat of rain was looming for Monday. We did indeed have some showers and breezy conditions return as the work week began. It felt great to have the windows open and feel some warmth from that sunshine for a change, so we’ll be asking for more of that in the days ahead, please. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating bir...
